Callum:Thanks

As Bluebell ran circles around him, Callum walked along the beach. The tide was out. The wet sand was a mirror for the sky, streaked with pale pink and purple lines. Callum took his shoes off, wriggling his toes. He felt a shiver move up his spine and the hairs on the back of his neck rise. He turned and his breath caught in his throat. Leah. Walking towards him in the pale gold light of the setting sun, her eyes on his. God, he loved her. He loved her. So. Much. He forced himself to take a breath. The strength of his feelings overwhelmed him. He held his arms out to her and she ran the last few steps, throwing her arms around his neck. He pulled her hard against him, molding her body to his as he kissed her hungrily. He lifted her, almost groaning when she wrapped her legs around his waist. He started walking, intending on taking her back inside, but she made a hot little sound in the back of her throat. It undid him. He pulled back, looking around quickly. She was pressing hot, frantic kisses to his face, his neck, any bare skin she could reach.

He walked across the sand to the scrub, pressed her up against the wide trunk of a mountain ash. Letting her feet fall to the ground, he lowered the zipper on the back of her dress, unclasped her bra. She pulled her arms out of both, moaning when he covered her breasts with his hands. She reached for his shirt, pulling at the hem with shaking fingers. Then she pressed herself against his bare chest. It drove him crazy. He ran his hand up her leg, pushing at the skirt of her dress. It was in the way. Leah shimmied out of it, standing there in just her underwear, her skin burnished gold in the last rays of the dying sun.

Callum watched her face as he slipped his hand under the waistband of her knickers. She gripped his shoulders when his finger found her clitoris. Her eyes turned glassy when he started moving against her.

“No,” she said on a ragged breath, pushing his hand away. “Inside me.” She pulled his head down to kiss him, her tongue tangling with his. Her need was as hot as his. He pulled her underwear down, sliding his hands up her thighs to her bottom. He felt her hands at the snap of his jeans and he thought he would combust if they didn’t slow down.

“Wait,” he said in a low voice. She stilled instantly. He lowered his forehead to hers, covering her galloping heart with his hand, feeling her take deep breaths to try and calm herself. He couldn’t wait any longer. He had to be inside her.

Like she was reading his mind, Leah pushed his jeans down then slid her hands up his chest and around his neck. Cupping her bottom, he lifted her, pushing into her as she wrapped her legs around his waist again. She let out a moan that Callum swore he felt to the depths of his soul. Bracing her against the tree trunk, he started moving, trying to go slowly, gritting his teeth against the overwhelming desire to pound into her.

“Callum, please,” Leah whispered against his neck.

“Look at me.”

She pulled back, her eyes dark and hungry on his face. He pulled out and pushed in hard. Then again. Over and over. Faster and faster. Until he saw her eyes go blind and she jerked against him. He let the orgasm take him as she contracted around him, crying out in her release, the sound the sweetest Callum had ever heard.

He stayed completely still for the longest moment, trying to get his breath back. Trying to come back to Earth. Leah, wrapped around him, wasn’t moving either.

“Bluebell will be scarred for life,” she said when she finally lifted her head. Laughing softly, Callum let her legs go, holding her steady as her feet hit the ground and she leaned into him for balance. They put their clothes back on. Leah giggled when she had to pull gum leaves out of her underwear. “Where is Bluebell?”

“Ran off, I guess. Didn’t want to see her parents having sex.” Callum whistled. They could hear the sound of Bluebell crashing through the scrub. “Jesus, she’s halfway up the river.” He whistled again. Bluebell barked in answer. She was soaking wet when she finally emerged, panting, from the bush. Callum grabbed her just before she jumped up to greet Leah. “Behave yourself. If you’re really good, you can come to the fireworks tonight.”

CHAPTER NINETEEN

Callum left Leah’s early on New Year’s Day. He said he was going fishing with John. They might stay overnight. It didn’t feel right. Something was off with him. With nothing better to do after Callum had left, taking Bluebell with him, Leah decided to clean the bathroom. As she scrubbed vigorously at the tiles in the shower, she found herself briefly entertaining the idea that something had happened in Sydney. Something that he didn’t want to tell her about. But then her instinct told her it wasn’t that. If he was cheating on her, he’d hardly ring her from his girlfriend’s house, would he? Plus, he just wasn’t that kind of guy. Then there was the way he was when he came back. So…intense. She felt hot all over just thinking about the sex they’d had on the beach. Making love with Callum was always amazing, but that…that was something else. Next level. More…everything. She sighed. Afterwards, they’d got dressed and headed to the main beach for a town party and fireworks at midnight. A few times, she’d found Callum watching her, his expression strange. Shuttered, but intense. There was that word again.

Leah stopped scrubbing as she heard a car moving down the track towards her house. She rinsed the scrubbing brush out and pulled the rubber gloves off before heading to the front door.

“Hey,” Juniper called as she turned off the engine of the sleek Mercedes.

“Hi! I wasn’t expecting you today, was I?”

“No, but I need to talk to you,” Juniper said as she crossed the drive, carrying a white cardboard box.

“Sounds scary,” Leah said with a frown.

“You haven’t seen any news today?”

“No, I’ve been cleaning.” Leah held the door open to allow Juniper to enter the house.

“Oh, where’s Callum?”

“Fishing.”

“Huh?”

“Yeah, that’s what I thought. With John. Possibly overnight.” Leah plonked down on a stool at the kitchen bench and swallowed heavily.

“Okay. I didn’t know they were doing that.” Juniper flicked the kettle on, pulled mugs from the overhead cupboard and small plates from the side cupboard, a frown on her face.

“Me either. Until this morning.”

“Is he okay?”

Leah shrugged.
