“I saw the video about a minute before you walked in the door. You got my reflex reaction.”

“And I didn’t give you a chance to give me any other reaction.”

“I don’t blame you. You were pretty hurt and I was pretty shitty. Very shitty.”

“Are you going to keep beating yourself up about this too?” She slipped her hand in his where it rested on the console. He wrapped his fingers around hers.

“Yep.”

“Don’t.”

“Stop me.” He smiled when she chuckled.

“It’s gonna give me the shits.”

“I’ll never forget your face when you walked out the door.”

“Callum.” She sighed his name. “When two people are in love, sometimes they’re going to hurt each other. This time it was you. With pretty good grounds to react the way you did — Don’t shake your head at me. Yes, it hurt me, but I can see why you reacted, in that moment, like you did. Are you sorry?”

“Very.”

“I know you are. So please let it go. For me.”

He blew out a breath. “Okay.” Maybe he did feel a little easing of the ball of tension he’d been carrying around for weeks. As he watched her, he saw a shadow pass over her face. “What is it, sweetheart?”

She looked away. When she brought her gaze back to his, he felt his gut tighten. “Are you sure about this?”

“Us? Yes.”

She looked down at their linked hands. “I can’t give you children,” she said, her voice low.

“There are lots of ways to make a family.”

She flicked a glance at him, then away again. “What if you change your mind? Need to father your own children?”

“I’m not going to change my mind, Leah. You think I’m going to leave the love of my life so I can have children with someone I don’t love? Raise them with someone I don’t love? How would that be fair to you, me, the mythical woman in this situation or our children. That’s crazy talk.”

“When you put it like that, it does sound crazy.” She shrugged. “It was such a big deal for Scott, that’s all. Having children from his own loins. He actually said that once.”

“The fuckhead.”

“Yeah.” Leah smiled, feeling much lighter. It was the last, glimmering sense of uncertainty for her. And now it was gone. “I don’t think I want a big wedding.”

“No.”

“You’re happy with small?”

“Yeah, it sounds good to me.”

“I mean registry office small.”

“Perfect.”

“You serious?”

“Yeah, I don’t want the fuss. I’d like to take everyone out for dinner afterwards, though. My parents, your parents, if you like. Mik and Rafe, Juniper, William and Billy. That’s it.”

“And Georgie.”
