“Yeah, she’ll be happy to see you.”
They went quiet after that. Georgie wasn’t sure what else to say and Brandon didn’t fill the silence. She flicked him a glance. He had a strange look on his face. “What is it?”
He shook his head.
“Tell me.”
He gave in. “All these surgeries you had. Who helped you?”
“Don’t do that.”
“Who?”
She didn’t know what else to say. “No one.”
He swore. She knew it would upset him. “I’m so fucking sorry.”
“I know you are.”
“It’s not enough.”
Georgie shrugged. “You can’t go back and change it. You did what you thought was right. And it was right. Look at you! You couldn’t have known something so dreadful was going to happen to me.”
“I’ll make it up to you.”
“Good.”
“Starting with making you have a lie down.” She rolled her eyes, but she was feeling exhausted. Utterly drained. Then she saw Ryan walking down the track towards them. She ignored the little lurch in her heart at the sight of him. It was just because he was so good looking. “I like this guy,” Brandon said, getting to his feet.
“Yeah.”
Ryan shot Georgie a look. A quick assessment. Satisfied, he held his hand out to Brandon. “Ryan O’Shannessy.”
“Brandon Quinn, obviously,” Brandon said with a self-mocking grin.
“Nice to meet you.”
“Likewise.” Then he turned and put his hand under Georgie’s elbow, pulling her up. “Georgie’s just going to have a lie down. I’m heading into town to get her some supplies.”
“I’ve got supplies,” Georgie lied.
“I’ll get you more supplies then. And chocolate.”
“Oh, okay then.”
“You’ll see that she lies down?”
“I will.”
“Great. I’ll be back later. We’ll have dinner.”
“You’re not the boss of me, Brandon Quinn. I’m older than you by seven minutes, don’t forget.”
“Funny,” Brandon said over his shoulder as he walked away.
Georgie sighed.
“Come on. Let’s not disobey the man.” Ryan put his arm around Georgie’s waist and helped her to her cabin. Once inside, she sat on the bed while he took her shoes off. She lay down and let him lift her legs gently onto the bed.
