This might be the best chance to handle that since any issues created could be watched over and cared for by Cam as they went.

She pulled up a parts site to see if she could find something she could work with in one of the local junkyards. Everything she was finding was little sports cars. She wanted something that would run forever and could deal with the sleigh’s weight.

An old Miata did not fit the bill.

She just put out three texts to guys in the area telling them what she needed when she saw Cam’s dad pull into the lot, Cam chatting away in the front seat, his typically happy self. The two of them laughed together before Cam hopped out and circled the car to where the trunk had been popped. He pulled out a few boxes, stacking them one on top of the other before heading toward his place.

Leave it to Cam to still be moving out of his parents’ house five years after moving in over here.

His mother was probably boxing up his room little by little and sending him home with something every week.

The knock on the side door pulled her out of her thoughts about figuring out how to remove the wood-decorated hood so she could get a safe space around the engine for the replacement.

She hit the intercom that was attached to the apartment. “Tyler, run down and grab the pizza. I’ll be up in a minute.”

“’Kay!”

She was not looking forward to the fact that on top of everything going on, she still had to do mom-duty tonight after Tyler’s lying and safety situation.

Counting to ten wasn’t going to help with the frame of mind she was already in.

And the fact she was even considering letting him work with Cam was giving her a headache.

Heading upstairs, she was happily surprised to see pizza, plates, and napkins all on the table like quasi-civilized humans.

While she might have momentarily forgotten the upcoming conversation, obviously Tyler hadn’t.

That at least was a good sign.

She washed up and headed in to find Tyler sitting at the table with his book.

“Finish the page, then it’s dinnertime.” She grabbed the pitcher of iced tea from the kitchen and headed back to where Tyler had put his book aside faster than ever and with absolutely no arguing.

Yeah, her son was no fool.

Neither was she—she’d let him sweat it for a bit.

“What do you think about the sleigh?” she asked instead.

And was shocked at exactly how many thoughts her son had on the topic. From the history of the work to the artist to the things he bet Cam would have to do to try to repair it.

Of course, in Tyler’s view, it was a done deal since Cam was the Hero of Everything in her son’s eyes.

She was just about to segue into the “you’re one step away from grounded for the rest of your life and if you ever lie to me again” talk when there was a knock at the door.

Tyler all but leapt out of his seat, obviously sensing the change in focus rolling off his mom.

“Mom! Cam’s here!”

Of course, because that’s what she needed right now.

“Saved by the bell,” she mumbled under her breath, not knowing if she was referring to herself or Tyler.

“Hey.” Cam stepped into the dining room, a grin on his face. “I hate to disturb your dinner, but we’ve been summoned by the High Council of the Harbor.”

“We have a high council?” Tyler asked, bouncing on his feet as if a quest was the next thing on the docket.

“No, honey. Cam is making a joke. We have selectmen.”
