“I’m Emi.” She finally let go and offered a hand.

Vivian wasn’t really sure what happened after that, just that she escaped the room as quickly as possible.

What was that snake doing cuddled up to his intern the day after he’d kissed her? That was just not cool.

Oh, they’d be having a word about this. Just let his cute little butt walk itself over toherspace and she’d have some things to say all right.

She stormed across the courtyard, into her garage. After last night he’d nearly convinced her to give him a chance. Ha. Like she was going to do that. She grabbed a rag and degreaser, then started in on the tool bench she had taken everything off of last night.

Well, see? She was right, she told herself.

He was just looking for things to be okay between them again. Show that he could have her if he wanted to.

Now that he’d seen she wasn’t shutting everything out of her life like Lyra accused her of on a regular basis, he was all Mr. Flirty with whoever?

And she was an idiot.

Oh, was she an idiot.

And she didn’t care if none of this sounded rational outside her head. Lyra would get it. Skye would point out why she was acting “erratic,” which was a very Skye word.

But it’s how shefelt.

She was scrubbing at the counter so hard she didn't even hear the footsteps sound behind her.

“I think that spot’s clean."

So he was just going to walk into her garage and say whatever he wanted? Huh?

Why was there never a handy wrench to throw when she needed one?

“Oh, are you done with yourmeeting?”She didn’t even bother to turn around because there was no sense throwing a rag at him.

She was just so mad. She’d thought she’d known how she felt, and then, bam.Having everything thrown in her face like that showed she’d underestimated her feelings.

It was herself, really, she was upset with.

Hadn’t she just been saying sheknewshe still had feelings for him but that she couldn’t fall to them because… well, exactly this.

She needed to protect herself because she needed to protect Tyler. They were a unit. And they needed to be a safe unit.

“Actually, the meeting went great.”

“I bet it did,” she muttered under her breath.

She heard him come closer and turned, figuring she was probably starting to look ridiculous.

“Vivian.” His voice was soft, but she could hear the amusement in it. “What are you doing in here scrubbing your way through that perfectly good bench top?”

“Nothing.” She shot back, then pivoted. “It has to be clean before we bring in the sleigh and a place for you—andEmi—to put your tools. We don’t want to add to any of the damage.”

He stepped closer and took the rag out of her hand.

“Do you want to talk about it?” he asked.

“About what?”

“About why you’re grumpy.” He grinned and stepped closer.
