One thing she learned about Noah very quickly, he was an absolute caretaker. Not a gossip, not a busybody, but just a straight-up caretaker.

And that's why he was stirring up a real sense of panic in her.

“Okay, you’re still kind of freaking me out.”

“Right. I’d like to tell you something. And I’d like it to remain between us.”

“You said that already.”

“Right.” He nodded again. “If you decide to do anything about it, fine. But if you don’t, I’d like you to just sit on it for a month or so and not say anything.”

Vivian took in a deep breath. She trusted Noah explicitly and that was the only reason that, after a moment of worry, she nodded her head and said, “Okay.”

He walked over to her, looked down into her face, and sighed. A very un-Noah-like move.

“Cam was in my café earlier.”

“Is he okay?” She suddenly felt like anything could have occurred since they talked and she wouldn’t know. What if something happened to him or his parents or…

“Vi.” Noah pulled her attention back. “He’s fine. He’s as normal-fine as a man going through a horrible breakup can be.”

“We didn’t break up. We didn’t break up because we weren’t together.”

“I understand you think that. But I also understand that our Cam believes in things like destiny. Having you say never—it’slikea breakup to him.” Noah paused. “And he desperately wants to keep all the promises he gave you. Which, to Cam, means taking himself out of the situation because he doesn’t think he can be around you and keep them without making you feel uncomfortable.”

She paused, realizing how true that probably was.

All her thoughts of getting back on track in a few weeks were pushed out further. Months probably. But she’d be patient with him. He was a romantic, but he was also the best man she knew. One of her favorite people. He’d come around and she’d just wait for him to do so.

“Did you come here to… what?” It wasn’t like Noah to take sides or yell at anyone, so she wasn’t sure where this was going.

“I’m here to give you one little piece of information.” He sucked in a deep breath as if he were jumping into the deep end. “Cam is going to Scotland.”

“On vacation?” That might be… good? Right? Like a little time apart.

“No. Vivian, honey. He’s moving there. He’s going to go study under some other wood dude and he’s making plans for it to be long-term. In his mind, long-term is pretty much forever with visits back to see his family.”

The blood that had been running cold froze as Vivian took the words like a punch.

“I just thought you should know.”

Noah leaned down and kissed her on the cheek before leaving her standing in her empty garage in stunned silence.

Cam

Cam had plans to make.Part of him was excited and he focused on that.

He’d always been one to think positive, take the good and run with it. That’s what he was going to have to do to make this work.

Not only was he being invited over to study, but they were asking him to teach a class on Americana. Of course he couldn’t say no to that. He was already building the curriculum in his mind as he sorted through everything he’d have to do over the next month.

And every few moments, he reminded himself: silver lining.

Luckily, he had no need to or interest in selling his workshop or building, so while it might feel like a giant storage unit, it would be here for him when he was ready to come back.

Vivian and Tyler also wouldn’t have to deal with an unknown person sharing their space. Not that there were a lot of unknown people in Starlight Harbor, but hey. Better safe than sorry.
