Jayce pulls his thoughts together. “I realize Madison is just another girl to you, but I know her. And I don’t think I’m going to be able to be satisfied with a few cheap thrills. I’m going after her. That’s why I had to close the blinds. This isn’t a strip club where we have some fun and walk away. I want her.”

Jayce and I have shared some wild business ideas. We’ve taken risks. But nothing has felt this dangerous or this right.

“Are you willing to share?”

“I don’t think she’d be satisfied with anything less. Let me sort this out tomorrow, make sure she knows what she’s getting into.”

Jayce

Shitsurecanhitthe fan at the worst time. I hang up from a call with Brett. He asked if I’d go pick up the paper copy of Roarke’s letter of recommendation for him. Who needs paper copies in the age of digital communication? He’ll probably frame the damn thing. Be proud he got a letter of recommendation from the great Doctor Shepherd.

I agree—anything to keep my son away from Madison. And it gets me in their house, which plays perfectly into my need to talk to her.

I storm over to their house and share the details of the breakup with Roarke since he seems completely ignorant of what his daughter’s been through. On other counts, I’ll accept his blissful obsession with work and not knowing what his daughter’s up to.

By the time I’ve spelled out why Madison broke my son’s nose, we’re in agreement that Brett deserved it. Roarke’s already sent the digital copy of the letter to Brett and hands me the paper copy since he’s a man of his word. And he’s still caught up on the whole image thing, wants to keep things quiet.

He’d lose his mind if he knew her other secrets. Maybe it’s best that she’s not around. He might be able to see right through the façade I’d have to wear if she was in the room.

Roarke is monologuing about the latest programs he’s brought to the hospital, and I have to admit he’s an asset to the community. But having overheard Madison and Brett talk the last few years, I know his success came at a cost of not being there for her.

My urge to protect her grows with each word as he drones on.

“Oh, Madison. We were just talking about you.” He interrupts his own rambling to greet his daughter who’s rubbing her eyes as she comes down the stairs. Her little shorts and crop top tease my dick.Down boy.

“Oh no. I didn’t realize we had company.” She freezes mid-step. “I thought you were on the phone. Um…I forgot something in my room.”

She takes a step up but her dad stops her.

“Nonsense, Madi. You need to hear what Jayce had to say. Something you should have told me earlier. And I need to make a lot more effort to get to know my own daughter.”

She must guess from his tone that he doesn’t know about the window.

“I really need to look over my lesson plans for next week.” She takes another step up.

I don’t know how I’ll get a chance to talk to her if she goes back upstairs. Even if she stays downstairs, I’m not sure how I’ll get her alone. I have to wing it.

“He’s right. Have a seat.” Can everyone hear the possessiveness in my voice? Is anyone else hoping she’ll sit in my lap? I want her close enough, I can smell her subtle minty scent. So delicate but lively, just like her.

She moves cautiously down the steps.

“You defended yourself against my son, but you let your dad think you were in the wrong. Guess that means I have to stand up for you.”

Her eyes go wide.

My gaze is fixed on her as she settles behind a chair. The swell of her pajama top over her breasts reminds me just how perky her tits are.

I manage to focus. “I was talking to Brett this morning when he mentioned that your father was writing a letter of recommendation for his med school application. After what happened between the two of you, I was surprised, so I came over to find out if my son was lying. He hasn’t exactly been truthful lately. Even to the point of hurting the people he should care about the most.”

“That’s where you could have been a little more open, dear.” Her dad has no idea what he’s in the middle of.

“We broke up. Nothing to see.”

Is she trying to tempt me with her wording? I’ve seen her nearly naked beauty. It’s almost evil that she can be so perfect.

“Don’t underestimate yourself, Madison.” I notice her chest heave when I use her name. I noticed it the other night too. Does she like that?
