Just like my aunt and uncle.

Just like the bastards who ran the dog fighting rings I stopped.

“You want to dance, boy?” he growled, cocking his gun.

I laughed. “You think that’s going to stop me? The only way you’re going to get out of this, is if you kill me. Which by the way.” I checked my wrist. “You better make it quick. I have a date.”

Tommy’s face turned red. “You know, I heard you were sick in the head. But the whole time I knew you, I never understood those rumors. Until now. It’s like you just don’t care.”

“I don’t.” I did but I never used to. Not until I met Busy and actually had a reason to live now. Add to the fact that she had my baby in her belly and nothing else mattered. Which reminded me to up his pain for hurting my girl who was growing something that belonged to me.

When I went to take a step forward, a commotion sounded on the other side of the door.

Tommy and I glanced at each other before we both did what the other had been thinking the whole damn time. We charged for the other, not caring what was going on outside of the office. We had one goal in mind and one goal only.

Death.

Tanner

TOMMY HAD AT LEASTtwenty-five pounds on me and some inches in height, but I was faster. When his fist connected with my cheek, it knocked me back a bit and forced a metallic taste in my mouth, but it was like this newfound awareness had taken over.

When he went to swing again, I ducked and swung the pipe against the side of his head. The end connected with his temple, but the big bastard didn’t go down like I had hoped.

An animalistic sound escaped him when he charged for me.

Not thinking twice about it, I grabbed the pipe with both hands, pulled it back and swung it forward with all the strength I could muster.

The pipe penetrated Tommy’s throat, the end coming out the back of his neck. Blood splattered my face and hands. His eyes bulged, his breath leaving him in short bursts of air.

“You should have shot me while you had the chance.” I pushed on the pipe until he slid further down it. “I warned you. You never mess with a man’s dog or his girl.”

As the life left him, I pulled the pipe back, ripping it free from his throat. Watching him fall to the ground in a crumbled heap, I nudged him with my Shit Kicker. I waited for any sign of life. When he only laid there, unmoving, it was like a weight had been lifted off of my shoulders.

“Do you still love me?” I heard myself ask.

“Yes,” Busy answered without even hesitating.

“You still want to be with me?” I nudged Tommy again because you could never be too safe.

“Tanner.”

My head whipped around. “I asked you a question.”

Her lips pursed, her eyes going hard. “Yes, now come over here and untie me, so I can touch you.”

I looked down at my hands. They were coated in Tommy’s blood.

“Tanner, please.”

Ignoring her, I rushed around the room, needing to find something, anything, to wipe off the blood that would forever taint my soul. When I couldn’t find anything, an idea came to me.

Fuck it.

Wiping my hands on my jeans, I got them clean enough where not a lot would touch her, but it didn’t matter anyway. I would never be able to scrub myself clean enough. I would always see the blood.

“Tanner.”

I wiped my face with the bottom of my hoodie. When I lowered the fabric, Busy was staring up at me.
