He released me, giving himself a little shake. “I need to see your mother. I’ll wait until you leave and then we’ll follow.”

I nodded, watching him walk to his bike with Uncle Greyson at his side. They straddled their machines and waited. Having them there relieved some of the tension resting on my shoulders, but it still wasn’t enough.

“Busy.”

My breath caught in my throat.

Warm arms wrapped around me, pulling me against a hard body.

My heart jumped, my stomach doing flips at having Tanner so close once again.

“Hey.” Tanner brushed his nose up the length of my throat. “You’re good. You’re safe, baby.” He kissed the spot beneath my ear, running his fingers over my lower stomach. “We’re good.”

A shiver rippled down my spine. “We’re safe,” I whispered, turning in his arms and wrapping myself around him.

“We are.” He kissed the top of my head. “I promise. I won’t ever let anything happen to you.”

“You can’t promise me something like that. Frankie took me. Tommy hit me. You…I…” I pulled away from him.

Tanner grabbed my hand. “Stop.”

“It’s true.” A lump lodged its way into my throat. I knew that this was not the time to be having this discussion, but I couldn’t stop the words from leaving my lips. “We need to go.”

Just as I was about to grab his hand and lead him to the SUV, a scream sounded from somewhere inside the building. The back door banged open, revealing a red-faced woman.

“Who did it? Who fucking killed him?” Tears streaked her cheeks, her hair a mess around her face. Her clothes were winkled and unkempt.

Tanner pulled me behind him. “What the hell are you doing here, Roxanne?”

My eyes widened. This was Sunny’s ex?

“I asked a question. Was it you, Tanner?” she seethed. “I know you’ve always been jealous of him.”

“You have?” I whispered.

“She’s crazy, baby,” he mumbled. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, Roxanne. He was like that when I showed up.”

“Right.” She sniffled, roughly wiping at her cheeks.

A couple of guys came up behind her, including Bear and Kid but she was none the wiser.

“You expect me to believe that.” She charged forward.

Faster than I ever thought was possible, Sammy ran past us and blocked her from getting to Tanner.

“Get out of my way,” she screamed.

Sammy sidestepped around her and grabbed onto her shoulders.

“Stop!” She reached behind her, her hand coming back with a large butcher knife in it.

He grunted, grabbing her wrist. “You shouldn’t bring a knife to a gun fight, sweetheart.” He squeezed until she winced, dropping the knife.

It shattered to the ground at her feet, her sobs becoming harder. “I just wanted Sunny to love me. I wanted Tommy to love me. But I wasn’t enough. For either of them. I’ll never be enough.” She sniffled. “It was never supposed to be Sunny. I never meant to kill him.”

My heart jumped to my throat. “It was you? You killed Sunny? This whole time, everyone believed it was Tanner.”

“I have no idea who you are.” She wiped her face. “Tanner never killed him. He never even had a hand in it. Tommy wanted him to do it though. Didn’t he?” she asked Tanner. “But you’re a pussy.”
