I laughed, running my hand over his small but chubby gray body. “Yeah. I would have told you, but I really wanted it to be a surprise.”

Tanner lowered Rex and hugged him to his chest.

Rex licked his chin, curled in his arms, and let out a soft sigh. It was like he had just met his person. His protector.

“Thank you,” Tanner whispered. “Thank you so fucking much, baby.”

“You’re welcome,” I said, my voice coming out shaky. “You’re not mad that I never told you?”

“No.” He shook his head. “You…this…” He kissed the top of Rex’s head. “I can never repay you for this.”

“You don’t have to.” I stood and placed a soft peck on Tanner’s cheek. “Or you can repay me later,” I whispered, waggling my eyebrows.

Tanner grinned, the thickness in the air no longer there.

We brought Rex into the house, letting him run free to get to know his new home.

When I married Tanner, I promised him that I would do everything I could to make him happy. He promised me the same and ever since, we had done that. Even if it was just something small.

Being with Tanner made me realize that there was no before him.

It was just us. Always us.
