“What’s so funny?” I demanded.

Tanner rubbed the back of his neck. “I’d probably be better off if you left me to die in your backyard.”

The twins chuckled.

It was like they knew something, an inside joke, that I wasn’t included in on. It had been something ever since I was a little girl and it pissed me off. I was the youngest and also the only female. The guys would keep things from me, thinking they were protecting me and because of that, I became naïve. But thankfully, I discovered the internet and I had friends who shed some light on things I wasn’t aware of. If it wasn’t for Lori and Heather, I wouldn’t know anything when it came to the opposite sex.

“Why do you say that?” I asked Tanner, knowing that if I wanted any sort of information, he would be the better one to go to.

“Your uncle has made a name for himself,” was all he said.

“Just like you have?” I threw back at him.

Tanner looked away, glancing out the window.

“We’re here,” Cyrus said before I could apologize to Tanner.

Something told me that he didn’t actually like the rumors that had been spread around about him. But I wondered why he never corrected people if they weren’t actually true. Or maybe some of them were. Maybe there were too many that he could no longer be bothered to set people straight.

Cyrus pulled up into a large parking lot, my uncle’s clubhouse sitting before us. It was a strip club but at the same time, a front for what actually went on in this place. The guys I had grown up with tried shielding me from it, but I wasn’t stupid. Also, my mom had told me stories whenever I asked. Like me, she had grown up in the biker life and her father was just as protective as mine. I wondered who was worse. My grandfather wasn’t as bad as my dad. Not to me anyway.

“What are we doing here?” Tanner asked, breaking the silence.

“We’re going to get that wound in your shoulder fixed.” Cyrus left the SUV, not leaving any room for question.

“I suggest hurrying the fuck up,” Sammy grumbled. “Don’t need your death on our hands.” He chuckled to himself, following his brother.

Sometimes I wondered about the men in my life. Especially now. They acted all nice and sweet but there had been something about Tanner that pulled darkness and depravity out of the twins. If the rumors were true, I could only imagine how my father would react when he found out whose life I saved.

Much to the twins’ dismay, Busy walked at my side as we headed into the old strip club. I had heard of her uncle. I even had a run in or two with her grandfather. But that was before my club threw me out and I had a target on my back. Now I was showing up on his doorstep, begging for help and at his mercy.

As soon as we neared the door, several large men started filing out of the club. They wore leather cuts with Mayhem’s Revenge on the left breast pocket. I didn’t see the president or vice-president anywhere. But I knew they were around. The guys were protecting their own. Which was what my club should have done for me but instead, they went behind my back and listened to that fucker before even allowing me to get a word in edgewise.

“Tell Kian that his niece is here,” one of the men told another all while keeping his dark eyes locked on mine.

I was man enough to admit it. I was scared as hell. Not for me. No, I didn’t care about my life. With Trigger gone and no longer having my club, not even a family of my own, what was the point? But what I did care about was Busy seeing something that would ruin her for the rest of her life. She was too damn young to be as broken as I was. I was sure she knew her family wasn’t perfect. But it didn’t mean she actually had to see the evils they did. I made a vow at that point to protect her from the wrongs of the world. I would make it so all she saw was the light inside the darkness. Nothing was going to taint my girl.

My stomach twisted.

She wasn’t mine.

She would never be mine.

You don’t deserve her.

Before I could drive myself crazy with the demons in my head, I took a step back when Kian Wolf exited the strip club.

“Where is she?” he demanded, his eyes scanning the group of guys surrounding him.

Busy laughed lightly, the sound vibrating through me, and rushed into his open arms.

He hugged her tight, his gaze finding mine.

I took another step back when a heavy hand landed on my shoulder.
