Tanner shifted beside me, his face wincing with each movement.

Much to my surprise, he let out a hard sigh and the next thing I knew, he was lying down with his head on my lap.

My eyes widened.

I caught Cyrus’s reflection in the mirror and shrugged.

He shook his head, looking back out onto the road ahead of us.

“He’s not safe for you,” Sammy said, giving me one of his many lectures that I had received over the years.

“And how exactly do you know what’s safe for me, Sammy?” I asked him, placing my hands on my hips.

“Just trust me. He’s not the guy you’re looking for.”

But maybe he was. Maybe Tanner was put in my life because he needed it and so did I.

While Tanner slept, I checked my phone and opened up the group text I had with Heather and Lori. I sent them a quick text stating that tonight was crazy and thanked them for the night out. I also mentioned that we would have to do it again sometime. I knew they would have questions as to why Cyrus and Sammy had pulled me out of the club. They knew I had grown up around bikers, but now, their curiosity was probably piqued even more. But I never told them much. It wasn’t like I ever invited them over to Uncle Greyson’s place. Not that he would allow it anyway. He was a private man. He even hated the parties that were constantly thrown but for whatever reason, he never stopped them from happening.

“No.”

I jumped, glancing down at Tanner.

He shifted, his brow furrowing.

I ran my fingers through the hair at his nape. “Tanner,” I whispered.

“Stop,” he said, louder that time.

I looked ahead, thinking that the twins would hear him but when they didn’t look our way and continued carrying on in their conversation, I blew out a breath of relief. “Hey, can you guys put on some music or something please?”

“Sure.” Sammy turned on the sound system and a scream came through the speakers as “Get This” by Slipknot started playing in the background. “Fucking hell, Bee.”

I laughed. “It’s not my fault you guys don’t listen to good music. A girl has to get it while she can.”

“You know, this is our vehicle,” Cyrus said, shaking his head. “When did you get a chance to play your shit?”

“The last time I drove it, I slipped my CD in there. Not my problem that you guys aren’t observant,” I teased.

“Women,” Sammy mumbled, changing the music to something that suited his tastes. Some rap song came on that I didn’t know but it was at least better than some of the shit they listened to.

“I don’t think most women listen to that kind of music,” Cyrus told his brother.

“True.” Sammy shook his head. “You are not normal.”

I snorted. “I was raised on horror movies and rom-coms. I’m all kinds of fucked up.”

The twins chuckled.

Truth was, I didn’t listen to music that others listened to. Not usually. I preferred the underground stuff that never made it to the radio. Or in this case, music that screamed at me. Literally. I couldn’t help it. Especially when it came to Corey Taylor. I could feel each word he sang down to the marrow of my bones. To say I was a fan was an understatement.

Tanner shifted, pulling me from my thoughts.

While the twins talked, I focused on the man currently sleeping with his head on my lap. So much had happened in the past few hours, it was like a whirlwind of emotions. I wondered if he had time to grieve over the loss of his dog.

“Bee.”

My attention was pulled to the front. The twins were staring back at me. I looked around us, not even realizing we had parked at Uncle Greyson’s clubhouse. I looked down at Tanner’s sleeping form. My fingers were brushing along the back of his neck. So subtle, but spoke so much through that simple touch alone. Something about this man on my lap called to me and I didn’t know why. I wasn’t sure if I would ever know. Maybe I wouldn’t find out. Maybe this was one of those moments that were just meant to be. It could be one of those moments that didn’t need any sort of explanation at all. Damn the consequences.
