“Johnny.”

I met Cyrus’s gaze. “What?”

“We’re not leaving you alone with him,” he bit out.

I rolled my eyes. “What’s he going to do? He’s high on pain meds and sleeping.” The fact that he trusted me enough to fall asleep on my lap, did something funny to me. It made me feel things I had never felt before.

A look passed between Cyrus and Sammy.

“Guys, seriously.” I huffed. “Just go. I’ll be fine. He doesn’t have any weapons on him anyway.” I remembered then how I demanded that he throw his pistol away. “Uh…that reminds me.”

Sammy’s scowl deepened. “What?”

“I told Tanner to throw his gun away,” I told them. “So, it’s somewhere in my backyard.”

Sammy muttered a curse.

“On it.” Cyrus pulled his cell out of his leather cut, made a call, and had a prospect go to my parents’ place to retrieve the pistol. At least that was one less thing I had to worry about.

“Thank you,” I murmured when Cyrus disconnected the call.

“You need to be more careful. If your dad found that shit…” Cyrus shook his head.

“This needs to stop,” Sammy added. “You don’t even know him. You don’t know what he did or what he could do.”

“Nothing’s going to happen,” I said but my voice wasn’t as firm as I would have liked. Sammy was right, I didn’t know Tanner, but I did know the connection we shared. It didn’t matter that we’d only met hours before. My parents had told me about that instant attraction they felt back in the beginning. Uncle Greyson felt it when he met Aunt Eve. Even if not everyone experienced it, it didn’t mean that it wasn’t possible.

“He’s bigger than you,” Sammy pointed out. “He doesn’t need weapons to hurt you.”

“I’m fine,” I insisted. It wasn’t like the windows were completely tinted. Any issues and someone could see, or I could just leave the vehicle. It wasn’t that hard. “I promise I’m fine,” I repeated when the guys didn’t budge.

Cyrus opened the driver’s side door. “Greyson is going to know we’re here and come out if we don’t go in. We’ll give him a few to wake up.” He looked at me over his shoulder. “Any trouble, you fucking scream. You hear me?”

“Yes.” I waved a hand between us. “Now go.”

Sammy grumbled a string of curses but left the vehicle and slammed the passenger door closed.

Maybe it wasn’t smart to insist on being alone with Tanner, but he did just have surgery. He needed rest. It would help him give my uncle and everyone else the answers they were looking for anyway.

Tanner stirred but his eyes remained closed. His long lashes fanned out. I was sure most women would love lashes like his.

Running my fingers through his hair, my body reacted to him in ways I had never experienced.

He shifted, wrapping his arm around me and snuggled his face into my lap.

I realized then how close he was to a part of me that no man had ever had access to before.

Tanner took a deep breath, a low rumble following soon after.

“Tanner,” I whispered.

That same growl left him again when he pushed his face harder into my lap. His back lifted when he took a deep inhale, a low groan following soon after.

God, he was smelling me. “Tanner,” I said, my voice firmer that time. “Wake up.”

He jumped, lifting his head. “I…I was dreaming.”

I laughed lightly, my cheeks burning. “I bet you were.”
