“Someone could come in,” I told him, but I still didn’t push him away. If anything, I hinted for more. “There are cameras. But most times I think people just say they’re around to keep everyone on edge.”

“Maybe. Let’s test your theory.” When his lips found the side of my neck, he sunk his teeth into the sensitive skin.

I gasped, a flush of heat washing over my skin.

“Hmm…my girl likes a little pain,” he said, his deep voice vibrating against my throat.

“I’m…I’m not your girl.” But although I said those words, I liked the sound of being his.

He chuckled, nipping the same spot again. “No one’s come to kick my ass yet. Think your Uncle Catch was lying about the cameras?”

“I don’t know.” But what I did know, was that I didn’t want Tanner to stop. At all. I chewed my bottom lip to stop the moan from leaving my mouth.

He swiped his tongue along the spot, soothing the sting. “And Busy, youaremy girl.”

“How? We only just met. You just had surgery.” I leaned back, shaking my head. “This—”

“Is perfect,” he finished for me. “I don’t give a shit that I just had surgery. I don’t give a shit that tonight was hell for me and that we only just met a few hours ago. You are the first thing since I brought Trigger home so many months ago, that has been something good for me.” He lifted his hand when I went to say something. “Is this fast? No. Being attracted to someone doesn’t mean anything. And, baby, I haven’t been attracted to someone in a long mother fucking time. If ever at all.”

I stared at him. “What does that mean?”

He sighed, his shoulders drooping. “I’ve never wanted someone. Not sex. Not a relationship. Nothing. Am I a virgin? No. But the few times I had sex wasn’t…” A dark shadow passed over his face.

I swallowed hard, my heart jumping. I had seen that look before. Something happened to him. I wasn’t sure what. I wasn’t even sure if he would ever tell me. Maybe one day.

“Anyway.” He cleared his throat. “I’ve never wanted to just spend time with someone like I do with you.”

“You’re high,” I said, trying to lighten the sudden heaviness in the air.

He chuckled. “I’m not that high.”

I smiled. “I think you are. You just met me tonight, Tanner.”

“So? Haven’t you ever been attracted to someone right away?”

“Not…no, not really.” I shrugged.

“But you’re attracted to me,” he pointed out.

That was when I realized that my hands were still on his waist. I went to pull away when he stopped me.

“No. Don’t pull away from me. I like when you touch me.”

My cheeks burned. I lifted a hand and ran my fingers gently down the side of his neck before brushing them lightly over his shoulder. “Does it hurt?”

“Not at the moment.” He leaned toward me, resting his forehead on my shoulder. “Busy.”

“Tanner.” I ran my fingers through the soft hair at the base of his neck.

“I know this doesn’t make sense.” He pushed his face into the crook of my neck. “I know this is new for both of us. I also know there are things going around about me. What I don’t know is what’s going to happen. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Not even an hour or two from now.” He lifted his head, his deep blue eyes searching my face. “But what I do know is that I want you.”

“Why?”

“Do I need a reason?” He reached out and cupped the side of my neck. Brushing his thumb back and forth, he leaned forward and placed a soft peck on my forehead and then my nose.

A hot tingle raced down my spine at the soft contact, but it wasn’t enough. I needed more and I couldn’t explain why.

Before I could say anything or even comment on the fact that this man, this beautiful and dangerous man, wanted me, footsteps sounded down the stairs.
