He squeezed my shoulder and joined the rest of the crew at the table. A part of me wondered what that was about but I wouldn’t press.

Grabbing the plate, I quickly left the kitchen and made my way toward the door leading to the basement. It was funny in a way. I had been through every inch of the house and used to feel so lonely. Especially when the guys went on their runs or was off doing their own thing. But now that Tanner was around, no matter who was home, it was like I could feel him and no longer felt alone.

“Where you off to, Bee?”

My steps halted. Turning around, I saw Sammy coming toward me. “I wasn’t expecting you home. Cyrus said you got pretty drunk last night.”

“Stop trying to change the subject.” He closed the distance between us and picked up a container of yogurt off the plate. “Strawberry. Good choice,” he said, placing it back before meeting my gaze. “You don’t have to be nice to him just because it’s in your nature.”

“It’s not in my nature.”

Sammy chuckled. “Yes. It is. You’re nice to everyone.”

“Someone has to be nice around here when all of you are grumpy as hell,” I threw back at him.

“Language, sweetheart.”

My heart leapt to my throat at the new voice coming from behind me.

Sammy smirked, glancing over my head. “Tray, how are you?”

My dad came up to my side. His dark eyes that mirrored my own, glanced down at the plate I was carrying. “Hungry?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Oh.” I laughed lightly. “Yeah. I didn’t eat a lot yesterday. I was going to read and have this as a snack.” I gave him a quick hug and started walking away. “I’ll see you later. My book isn’t going to read itself,” I laughed again, spun on my heel, and rushed off to my bedroom.

Please don’t follow me. Please don’t follow me.

I chanted the words over and over in my head but of course, my father didn’t listen.

“Is something wrong, Bee?”

I swallowed hard but continued walking down the hall toward the room I stayed in while I was at Uncle Greyson’s. “No. Not at all. Why would you think something’s wrong?”

“Because you’re my daughter and I happen to know you.” Dad followed me to my room.

I bit back a sigh and entered my bedroom, placing the plate of food meant for Tanner, on my dresser. “Nothing’s wrong,” I said, turning toward my father.

“You sure?” he asked, leaning against the doorframe.

I nodded. “How was your week?”

“Good.” He paused. “Something’s wrong. I can feel it.”

“No, it’s not.” I went up to him and wrapped my arms around his hard middle. “I promise, Daddy. Nothing’s wrong.”

“Alright, if you say so. But if I find out that someone hurt my baby girl in any way…”

I leaned back, looking up at him. “You’ll give them a booboo?”

He rolled his eyes. “Something like that.”

“You know the guys always have my back,” I reassured him.

“Yeah, that’s what I’m worried about.” Dad cupped my shoulders, holding me at arm’s length.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean…” He thought a moment. “I know I’ve kept you sheltered. I was only trying to protect you. I just don’t want you getting hurt but I also know that you need to experience things for yourself so you can learn from them.”
