I nodded, chewing my bottom lip.

“No matter what the twins say. Or what anyone says for that matter, I won’t hurt you.”

“I know.”

He smirked, kissing me gently on the nose before stepping back so I could exit the closet. He held out his hand again, waiting.

I placed my hand in his.

Tanner brought it up to his mouth, running his lips along the back of it. “Thank you.” He placed a gentle kiss on the back of my hand before leading me out of the closet.

Tanner had an air about him. He was like a tornado sucking me into his grasp. I had no control when it came to him. When he told me that he didn’t kill Sunny, I believed him. Even though I hadn’t known him for long, I could just see the truth in him.

It may have been naïve of me, but I believed that your soul could recognize the truth in another person, and everyone needed someone to believe in them. I didn’t think this man had ever had that. I would be that someone for Tanner and if that made me naïve, then so be it. At least I gave him that much.

There was something about him that I could see. Something deep inside him. He had walls up and didn’t let anyone in. But piece by piece, I knew I could break them down.

He just needed to let me.

TANNER HAD BEEN LIVINGat the club for almost a month and he was no closer to getting the answers he was looking for.

On one hand, I was sure it was frustrating for him and everyone else involved. But on the other, at least he was safe. Even if he was stuck in the basement.

My dad had been by often, but I was still able to sneak away and spend time with Tanner. I went home every few days, so Dad wouldn’t grow suspicious and worked at my mom’s shop whenever she needed the extra hands. It had been odd seeing Shade, knowing Tanner was living at Uncle Greyson’s.

Whenever I was back at the clubhouse, I would check in on Tanner. I learned quickly that he loved animals. Besides dogs, he loved them all. But we hadn’t almost had sex again. We cuddled and stole a few quick pecks here and there, but it hadn’t been like the last time. My thoughts traveled back to a week ago when I called him out on it and the aftermath of my outburst.

“Tanner.” I opened and slammed his door shut, not caring at all if the people in this damn house heard me. “What the hell is going on? We kiss and then all of a sudden nothing. Did I do something?”

He rose from the bed, placing the plate of food I had brought down for him earlier, on the nightstand. “Come here.”

“No.” I stood there with my hands on my hips. “You come here. I need to know what I did.”

“You didn’t do anything.” He pointed to the bed. “Come. Here.”

“No,” I said, lifting my chin defiantly.

Before I knew what was happening, he was around the bed and directly in front of me in a matter of seconds. I jumped, spinning around to open the door when a heavy hand slapped against it.

My heart jumped to my throat, my body coming alive at the mere intensity rolling off of him.

“To answer your question, Busy, I’m trying to be a gentleman. I’ve never done this before. I don’t want to just fuck and that be it.” He cupped my shoulders, turning me around to face him. “Look at me.”

I met his stare, placing my hands on his chest.

“I want you. I’ve wanted you since I showed up in your backyard.” He brushed his thumb along my bottom lip. “But I also want to get to know you first.”

“That hasn’t stopped you from kissing me. A few times I might add,” I threw back at him.

A slow smile crept on his lips. “That’s because I have no self-control when it comes to you.” He leaned down, placing a soft, gentle kiss on my mouth.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, deepening the kiss.

He growled, giving my bottom lip a gentle nip. “Stop fucking teasing me.”

I giggled, kissing him one last time before pulling away. “Until tomorrow, Tanner.”
