“How are you?” she asked, taking a step toward me.

Closing the distance between us, I pulled her into my arms and wrapped myself around her.

“What’s wrong?” she asked, not waiting for me to answer her first question. “You’re shaking.”

“Something’s wrong. I can—”

The door suddenly slammed open, revealing a man I had never seen before.

Busy jumped, spinning around. “Daddy?”

Daddy? Oh, fuck me.

I had never met Tray Lister before. I hadn’t even seen what he looked like. He was smaller compared to Greyson and even the twins, but he was still bigger than I was. Tattoos lined the sides of his neck, disappearing beneath the collar of his black long-sleeved shirt.

Nomad sat on a patch on his leather cut. I had heard that he was no longer a nomad though. Must have been there as a reminder to where he came from.

“What are you doing here?” Busy asked him, completely ignoring the fact that he was staring directly at me. Red faced and breathing heavy, he looked like he was ready to pounce. But I stood my ground. I loved his daughter. I didn’t give a shit who he was. I wasn’t backing down without a fight.

“Dad,” Busy repeated, firmer that time. “What’s going on?”

“I didn’t want to believe it, but I was told you were here. And you.” He glared down at his daughter.

She glared right back, placing her hands on her hips, staring up at him defiantly. “I’m an adult.”

“I don’t give a shit if you’re eighty years old. What the hell are you doing and with him of all people?” he demanded, thrusting his arm out toward me, his voice raising.

Busy laughed. She actually fucking laughed. “You can’t honestly stand there and judge me for who I decide to be with. Do you remember grandpa telling you to stay away from mom?”

“I wish she wouldn’t have told you that,” he grumbled.

“She didn’t have to. Grandpa told me.” Busy moved to the spot in front of me, crossing her arms under her chest and staring her father down. “I love him.”

A shiver raced down my spine at her confession. Even though I had heard her tell me it over and over, I never heard her tell someone else how she felt about me.

“You love him,” Tray repeated. He was the one to laugh that time.

“Alright, listen,” I blurted, shocked at myself that I had butted in. When Tray and Busy both looked my way, I went with it. “I came here asking for help. That’s it.” And fell in love in the process.

“Right. And you came here to take advantage of my daughter too.” Tray took a step toward me.

“Oh yeah. That’s my thing. Didn’t you know that? I make nice with the president of clubs, weasel my way into their house and fuck the youngest female living with them.” I feigned a yawn. “I’ve now added Busy to my ever-growing list.”

“Tanner.”

I ignored Busy and went toe-to-toe with her father. “I’m sick of this shit. I’m not getting any answers. So do your thing, Tray. Or have you become a pussy as you’ve gotten older? I heard you used to do some pretty wild shit. Makes me look like one of the good guys.”

“Stop this.” Busy pushed between her dad and I, placing her hand on my chest. “Back up, Tanner.”

“I’m sorry,” I told her gently.

She sighed. “You good?”

I was now.

She turned back to her dad. “And you. You need to stop this.”

“Oh, I haven’t done anything yet.” Tray left the room and came back a second later with a baseball bat.
