(Bee)

I was pacing.

Back. Forth. Back again.

I had slipped the ring I had taken from Tanner’s pocket and put it on my middle finger of my right hand. I didn’t know who it had belonged to. Or even what exactly was in the account. I could only assume it was money. A lot of money.

Also add to the fact that Tanner knew I was pregnant. Stupid me. Of course he did. It wasn’t like I had gone out of my way to hide the pregnancy test. I wanted him to find it. I had imagined at the time how he would react. Would he be like some of the guys I had heard about and be turned on by it? Or would he be like the heroes in my romance books and become more of an Alpha male knowing their baby was in the woman they loved? When I thought about all the ways that he would react, nothing prepared me for how calm he had been. Maybe under different circumstances, he would have reacted the way I expected. Maybe he still would. But for now, all I could think about was keeping my baby safe and having Tanner back in my arms.

“Bee?”

I spun on my heel, finding my mom coming into the main area where the bar and tables were. Uncle Greyson had thrown get-togethers there quite often, I could still hear the noise from the last party and feel the music deep in my bones.

“Mom?” I rushed to her and threw myself into her arms.

“What’s going on, sweetheart?” she asked, hugging herself around me.

“I don’t know,” I cried. “Something’s wrong and I don’t know how to fix it or what to do.” My throat burned, my eyes welling with unshed tears. I just wanted to take Tanner and get out of there. But the other part of me, the rational part, knew that could never happen. Not until he got the answers he needed.

The door leading to the basement, opened with a bang, making both Mom and I jump.

Dad was first while the rest of the guys followed him into the room.

“Where’s Tanner?” I asked, rushing toward Dad. I looked around him but didn’t see Tanner or Uncle Greyson anywhere. “Daddy, please tell me where he is.”

He looked down at me, that familiar tick in his jaw becoming more pronounced as time went on.

“Tray.” Mom came up behind me. “What is it?”

“You should probably go to your room,” he told me.

“No. What happened? What did Uncle Greyson do?” I gave Dad a shove when he wouldn’t answer me. “Tell me!”

“Johnny, you need to calm down.”

“Would you calm down?” I demanded, spinning on Cyrus.

Voices sounded around us, but I couldn’t make out who was saying what. No one was giving me any answers. I feared the worst, unsure as to what exactly Uncle Greyson was capable of doing. I only knew that he would do anything to protect his family.

“Bee.”

My head turned slowly as Aunt Eve and Aunt Sara came toward us.

“What’s going on?” As soon as Aunt Eve asked the question, her husband came up the stairs from the basement.

Tanner followed behind him, his head bowed, his shoulders hunched.

“Tanner.” I rushed to him.

His dark eyes met mine.

“Please talk to me. Tell me what’s going on. Please.” I continued asking the same question, but I still wasn’t getting anywhere.

Tanner placed a soft peck on my forehead.

My breath caught, my eyes welling at the gentle touch coming from someone like him.

“I love you, Busy,” he whispered. “I’ll come back to you and our baby. I promise.” He kissed my cheek, grazing the back of his hand over my lower stomach. “Wait for me, beautiful. Don’t fucking stop waiting.”
