“Should I ask why you’re here, kid?”

I stepped to the side, letting him in. “You can.”

He came into the house, stopping directly in front of me. Even though I was now older, he was still a few inches taller than I was and he was definitely wider. But he didn’t scare me. And he sure as hell wasn’t going to stop me from making his daughter happy.

“Tell me why you’re in my daughter’s home this early.” Before he broke every bone in my body, went unsaid. Or maybe it would have been a different threat. I wasn’t sure but I was highly amused just the same.

“She went to my sister’s place last night and had a little too much wine, so I picked her up and drove her home. I made sure she was safe and came back this morning to see how she was feeling.” I was shocked at myself at how quickly the lie rolled off my tongue.

“Really?” Angel turned toward me. “Her car’s in the driveway.”

“It is. I took a cab over to my sister’s place, picked it up, and drove it back here. Did you want a coffee?” I went to the kitchen, not waiting for him to respond. A part of me wondered if he had met Matt like this. The fucker Gigi apparently dated for who knew how long. I wasn’t sure if they ever did anything sexually but when she told me that no man had ever gone down on her before, I wondered if she only dated him to piss me off. Either way, the reason didn’t matter, because it worked.

“What do you want with my daughter?”

And there it was.

I poured two cups of coffee before turning around to face Angel.

I want to fuck her. Break her. Make her give me every single inch of her until she’s begging and screaming for more.

“We’re friends,” I said instead.

He grunted, coming toward me and taking the cup of coffee I offered him. “Right. You must think I’m stupid. I’ve seen the way you look at her. I’ve heard the rumors.”

“Your daughter’s walls are hard to crack, so whatever’s going on between us, stays right where it is.” She had walls up and I needed to figure out why. It probably had something to do with her career and the accident she had but at the same time, it wasn’t like I had ever given her any reason to doubt my feelings for her.

“Her mother was the same way.” Angel shook his head. “Even after I made her fall in love with me, it still took years for her not to worry every damn day that I’d leave her.”

“What did you do?” I had never actually carried on a full conversation with him. But I found that I wanted it. No, I needed it. I needed to prove to Gigi and her father, that I was it for her. Thatwewere it.

“It was the small things. I bought her flowers at random. Even though she joked and said she hated them because they always died too quickly, I still bought them anyway because her eyes lit up every time I came home with them.” He went to the dining room table and sat, waiting for me to do the same.

I joined him and soaked up the information he was giving me.

“I also made sure to never forget the important dates. Her birthday. Our wedding anniversary. Even the anniversary of when we first kissed.” Angel sat forward. “It’s the small things, Vince. If you want to prove to my daughter that there is something between you two, first, you need to have patience. Second, don’t give up.”

“I don’t plan on it.” I took a sip of my coffee. “But there’s no reason for her to be guarded with me.”

“Does she know that you’re in love with her?”

I choked, coughing when the coffee went down wrong.

Angel stared at me. “She doesn’t.”

“Uh…we haven’t gotten there yet.”

He nodded. “Listen, I’m not your dad. I won’t give you a hard time like he gave your sister and Zach. But Gigi is my baby girl. She’s my first. If I find out that you hurt her, I’ll make you disappear.”

Somehow, I didn’t put it past him. I went to comment when the scent of lavender wafted into my nose. I turned, finding Gigi coming toward us.

All breath left me as I stared at her.

Her hair fell down around her shoulders in waves, a fresh coat of cherry red gloss sat on her lips. She was wearing a white knee length dress that made the caramel in her eyes, pop. Her gaze caught mine. She gave me a small smile before joining us at the table.

“Did I miss something?” she asked softly.

An answer was on the tip of my tongue but all I could do was stare at her. Fuck me, she was beautiful.
