“I didn’t take that girl out and after the fifth call, I blocked her number. I was trying to see Lucy’s reaction.”

Colton snickers. “Yeah, way to go, Romeo. I can already see she is crazy about you. She’s blowing up your phone to hang out like old times,” he mocks.

I pull out my phone and type out a text.

“What are you doing?” Leo asks.

“What does it look like? I’m asking her to come over,” I say.

The guys wait with their brows raised.

Leo fishes his phone out of his pocket. He reads something on it and looks over at me from across the other side of the couch. “She said no.”

“She won’t even answer me directly. What the fuck?” I send her another text.

Me: Can we stop this?

“What did she say?” Colton asks.

“Nothing. She won’t answer me. I’m trying to at least be civil with her.”

“Relax, Mase,” Leo says.

“How? I lost her.” I rub my eyes, trying to avoid the sting from the back of my eyes. I want her back in my life so badly.

Leo sits up. “Be the guy she fell for. Be the friend she cared for and admired. Don’t be the dickhead jock that is riling her up just to get a rise out of her.” He sighs. “And don’t threaten to hurt whoever she is fucking. We all know when a girl is getting play somewhere else. I’m sorry, Mase, but you cannot get mad she is sleeping with someone else. You hurt her and you hurt her bad. Stop being so fucking stubborn before she really falls for the guy.”

“Alright, but what do you mean, the guy?”

Leo lights up a blunt and takes a drag, lighting the tip. The smell of marijuana is circulating in the air when he hands it to me. I take a hit and blow it out, trying to calm down.

“The guy she has been with. And let me tell you, sounds like he is winning her over,” Colton says.

“How do you know?”

He snorts. “Trust me, I know when a girl settles for something else because she figures what she wanted was a lost cause.”

Chapter Twelve

Mason

Idrive my car through the gates of Lucy’s house, hoping my plan of asking her out on a date doesn’t blow up in my face. When I knock on the door, Lucy’s mother opens the door and greets me with a smile. She is dressed in an off-white pantsuit, probably back from one of her fundraisers. Mrs. Sincere is always the proper wife and walks a fine line because of Lucy’s father.

“Hello, Mason. What brings you by? Aiden and the guys are not here.”

“Umm. I’m actually here to see Lucy if that’s okay.”

Her eyes brighten. “Does she know you are stopping by?”

My hands dip inside the pockets of my jeans. “No. She is not expecting me.”

She waves her hand toward the marble staircase with black railing. “She is in her room.”

I hesitate to go up the stairs. The only time I go to Lucy’s room is in secret and it’s usually when her parents aren’t home. Deciding on whether to just wait for her to call Lucy down or make my way up the steps, her mother decides for me.

“Go ahead, Mason.” She lowers her voice. “It’s not like I don’t know you visit her in her bedroom at night.” Fuck. She knows. Her blue eyes, the same color of Aiden’s and Lucy’s, find mine. “Who do you think leaves the patio door open?”

Fuck my life. I always wondered why that door was always left open. Taking a deep breath, I lower my gaze.
