He backs away. “Damn, I get it.” He runs his fingers through his hair. “I won’t touch her, Mase. I didn’t think.”

“You thought wrong.” I walk him back until he hits the locker.

“Yo, Mase, chill. I didn’t mean—”

“I’m making sure you understand because I know how you think, Josh. You are waiting for me to fuck up so you can slide in, and I’m telling you that will not happen. Lucy is mine. She has been and always will be mine.”

He nods in understanding.

Leo walks up and takes in the scene. “Let me guess, he wanted to ask Lucy out? I’m glad you’re giving him the message.” Leo leans against the locker, already dressed and ready to head out.

“I don’t want any problems with the Kings,” Josh says with fear showing in his eyes.

I back off and Leo laughs. “I think he almost shit himself.”

Josh runs away and almost falls face-first after tripping over the bench. Leo bellows in laughter and I give him a grin.

“Just making a point so he can tell the other guys who think they can touch what’s mine.”

“Relax, Romeo. No one is going to take Lucy away from you. She can handle her own. She’s been crazy about you since, like, ninth grade.”

My brows pinch. “Was it that obvious?”

Leo smirks. “What? That you two have been eye fucking each other for years?” He snorts. “I have had to put up with you sneaking looks at her when she would walk around in her cute, sexy outfits just for your benefit. Everyone could see that you two have a thing for each other. It sucks that you fucked it up, but I’m hoping she can forgive you. I still can’t believe she fucked Smiley though.”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

He slaps me on the back. “Thatvatois crazy about her. I thought you should know.”

“What the fuck do you mean?”

“He’s been moping ever since that night you two showed up.”

“He was getting his two-inch dick sucked in a car,” I quip, getting pissed and annoyed at the same time.

“He was trying to get over her the same way you were.”

“She loves me, not him,” I seethe.

Does she? She said it meant nothing, and she was trying to get over me. To move past us, but last night she let me touch her. She let me kiss her.

“I’m not worried about it,” I say. “It’s in the past. I’ll prove to her we are destined to be together. Before, I was too stupid trying to please my father to realize it.”

“I’m rooting for you because I know you love her. I have a feeling she still does too and always will. Just be there for her and have faith in the love you guys felt. Everyone could see it.”

He is not wrong. Like I said, Leo can read people very well.

“Let’s go. Maybe she will cheer for me this time.”

Leo laughs. “Yeah, I think this time she will.”

It’s the fourth quarter, and we are down by one with two minutes left in the game. All the starters are in the game. Aiden calls the next play and he is going to throw twenty yards to the far left.

I sprint to the left and turn as Aiden throws the ball in a perfect spiral right into my hands. Touchdown. The stadium roars in victory, and my eyes instantly go to the only girl I want cheering for me. To my surprise, Lucy is standing up, cheering her heart out, screaming my name.

My heart soars and I take off my helmet and point the ball in her direction. I place my hand over my chest and point toward her.
