“Where did they go?”
“They went to the fast-food joint at the meetup and then they were going to handle some cartel shit for the Kings.”
I know what that means, import and export of a shipment.
“How long have they been out?”
“About an hour. It never takes that long. I always make sure they come back when they go on runs or are handling stuff like this.”
“Okay. Stay there and I’ll get Khalani and we’ll go see why they aren’t answering.”
“Are you sure it’s a good idea? I thought you could get the guys or something.”
“They can’t all walk out of practice. It’s too obvious and would raise questions if all four left practice.”
“You’re right. I’ll wait here, hopefully they’ll come back and I’m just overreacting.”
“I’ll be right there, and Linda?”
“Yeah?”
“If anything goes wrong. I’ll get him back.”
She knows I’m talking about her brother Alex. Linda is part of our family and she has sacrificed her happiness to be there for her brother and the last thing she needs is to lose him too.
“Thank you, Lucy.”

While Khalani drives my Porsche, I check the silencers on the Glocks and holster them. I make sure one is good to go for her.
“If they are in trouble, I’m going to jump out,” I say. “If you see they got me or I’m in trouble, do not go after me.”
“Are you crazy, Lucy? Aiden would kill me.”
“This is not about Aiden or about me. Nothing can happen to you,” I say with a stern tone, looking at her with a serious expression as she drives my car toward the meetup.
“Why? What do you mean? You’re more important.”
I shake my head. “You need to stay alive and give my brother children. The Mendoza name must go on, Khalani. You’re too important. My family’s legacy lives with you. Not with me. I’m not married and don’t officially belong to anyone.”
“You belong to Mase.”
I laugh. “I’m just Mason’s girlfriend until his father makes a point and forces him to do otherwise. Mase said that was the reason he had to let me go. He says he loves me, but family loyalty is thicker than water where we come from. Mase is a cartel king. He is young but a King, nonetheless. They will force him to marry some trophy wife, eventually. I could get pregnant and have ten of his kids and they would all be bastards in his father’s eyes.”
Khalani has tears in her eyes. “What are you going to do if Smiley and the guys are in trouble?”
My lips form a grim line. “What they trained me to do. Eliminate the threat. I’ve kept such a low profile so I wouldn’t give my father’s plan for me away. I’ve had to hold back even if I knew I could take someone out. You have no idea how many times I wanted to take out bitches like Gloria and Ivy.”
“I thought I felt bad for Gloria, but honestly, I couldn’t. What she did was awful, and that was no way to win someone over.”
“I guess you’re right. She went a little psycho. I think the guys were more shocked than anything.”
We arrive at the meetup parking lot and Alex’s car is in the corner, but I don’t see anyone.
“Pull behind the building, but slowly. Remember, if anything happens to me, you leave me. Nothing can happen to you,” I instruct Khalani.
