The other members hustle to get Alex’s car, but Alex walks with me toward the Porsche. “We will talk about this at the house,” he says.

We took the guy’s gun, but a car is rumbling in the distance and gunfire can be heard. The sound of bullets flying in disarray assaults my ears. Alex opens the door of the Porsche but a stray bullet grazes my arm and searing hot pain engulfs me.

I wail in pain as Alex pushes me into the back seat.

“Khalani, drive!” Alex roars.

The ding of bullets hits the Porsche, and I can hear the screeching of tires as she speeds out of the parking lot. Alex returns gunfire and shoots out their tires, causing the car following us to swerve and hit a large van on the side of the road, halting their chase.

My breaths come faster with the rush of adrenaline hitting me all at once. The pain in my arm is excruciating, and I close my eyes.

“Why did you come for me,preciosa? You shouldn’t have come for me. Neither of you.”

“No one could have talked her out of it,” Khalani says. “The Kings are at football, so they don’t know. Linda felt something was wrong and called Lucy. She came to get me, and we drove out here to make sure you guys were fine. The other members went to the drop-off point to see if you guys were there. You weren’t answering. Now we know why.”

My vision blurs in and out, but I ignore it. Alex caresses my hair and looks at my arm.

“You’re hit,” he says frantically.

“A bullet grazed me. I’ll be fine.”

“Fine my ass, Lucy. What the fuck were you thinking?” He kisses the side of my head. “I would die if anything happened to you, hermosa. If I’m in trouble, you don’t come for me. Do you understand?”

“You know that is not going to happen,” Khalani retorts. “We have had enough death with my brother dying.” She shakes her head. “Not happening. I can’t do that to Linda or to me. We can’t lose you too, Alex.”

Chapter Thirty-Nine

Lucy

When Khalani pulls up to Alex’s house, smoke billows from the hood of the Porsche. Linda hears the car pull in and runs out frantically toward the car with tears in her eyes.

“You need to get rid of all guns and my car, Alex. If anyone saw us, they will trace my car. It’s fucked anyway.”

Alex’s head is bleeding as Khalani and Linda rush to help us inside.

“Get the first aid kit,” Linda instructs the other members.

When they see me, they all nod in respect as Alex holds me to his side, guiding me to the bathroom.

He places me on the vanity and inspects my arm. It hurts like crazy, burning and stinging.

“Do you have painkillers, Alex? My arm hurts really bad,” I croak.

“Only regular shit. I got weed and alcohol. I’ll fix you up the best I can.”

I nod. He screams for an edible and tequila. When one member comes in, his eyes look at me with concern when he sees the large wound on my arm.

“Chale, holmes, she needs to get stitches on that. She needs to go to the hospital.”

“No hospital, too many questions,” I say breathlessly. The adrenaline is wearing off, and the pain is coming full force and it fucking hurts.

“No mames wey, fuck that. She’s right. They will know it’s from a bullet grazing her arm and they will pin her at the meetup. I will fix her up the best I can.”

“Linda says the Kings are on their way.”

Alex nods, and I look at the gash on the side of his head. “You need to clean that up.”

“Don’t worry about me. Nothing can happen to you, Luciana. Where did you learn to shoot like that?”
