“I’m cooking, Sam, and you need to be cutting.”

“Doesn’t mean I can’t say hello in the best way I know how.”

“I know,” she said as she turned around to face me.

She grabbed me by the face and gave me a long, hard kiss.“I’ve missed you as well, Sam, and I want to kiss you and touch you, but first, I want you to eat this meal because you didn’t get to eat the food at the picnic, which greatly disappointed me.”

I groaned.“I’m sorry about that.”

“It’s okay.I was thinking about it.And I know if I would’ve called you and you would’ve said you were at home, but I saw you on the street holding hands with another woman, I wouldn’t have reacted well either.”She sighed.“Maybe I should have …” She paused, and I grabbed her hand and squeezed.

“You don’t need to apologize to me.I messed up, and I should have trusted you.”

There was no way I wanted her to feel bad for the situation, seeing as I was the one in the wrong, and she didn’t even know the worst of it yet.

“Okay. Now go back to chopping.I need those onions stat.”

“Yes, ma’am,” I said as I stepped back, grabbed the knife, and started chopping again. We sang along to the Frank Sinatra song playing through the speaker in the kitchen.

“This should be our song,” she said with a giggle as “Strangers in the Night” boomed into the room.

“Oh yeah.Why?”

“Because we were two strangers in the night, that night that we met.Neither one of us had ever heard of each other before. We’d never seen each other before. It was like fate.”

My stomach twisted in knots at her words. What she was saying wasn’t exactly true.I had heard of her before.I had gone there to meet her.I needed to tell her.

“Okay, Sam, I need the onions and the garlic.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“The basil’s in the fridge. Will you get that out as well?”

“You’re really going all out, aren’t you?”

“Well, I want to impress you. They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”

“You know, you’ve already got my heart, Valentina.”

She looks at me, her eyes dancing.

“And I want to keep it, Sam.”

I touched her on the back lightly, my heart soaring with happiness and joy being with her.Is this what it felt like to be in love?Is this what it felt like to be happy and satisfied and content? Is this what it was like to be at peace with yourself in the universe?I couldn’t remember another instance when I felt so relaxed and enjoyed someone’s company so much.

I handed her the basil, and she ripped a couple of leaves off and put it in the pot that was simmering on the stove.

“Wow.That smells good.”I sniffed the air.“How long is it going to take to cook?I’m hungry.”

“Well, a good pot of Bolognese takes hours.”

I groaned.“Hours?But I’m hungry now.”

“Well …” She turned to me with a little smile.“I thought once the Bolognese was cooking, I’d put it on simmer, and we could have appetizers.”

“Appetizers.Ooh.What are we having for appetizers?”I looked around the kitchen to see if I could see what she’d made.

“Well, I was thinking …” She licked her lip seductively and stepped toward me.
