“Same here,” Sergio said.“It’s not like she’s just going away.I want her to answer the questions that have been building up inside me for years.”

“Uh-huh.”I shook my head and was about to say something else when Dad stopped next to us.

“Hey, sons.”

“Hey, Pops.”When I looked up, he grabbed a beer from the table, took a couple of swigs, and sat down.

“So, I’m guessing this is about the meeting tomorrow with your mom?”He looked directly at me, and I nodded.

“You always were a smart dad.”

“Yeah.Well, I hope you boys will join us.”

“So what, we can play one big happy family and pretend nothing ever happened?”

My dad pressed his lips together.“I know you don’t understand, but your mom was my first love. She’s the mother of—”

“I know she’s the mother of us boys. She gave you everything.La di da di da.She also left you to raise us by yourself. She broke your heart.”

“She did, and I want to know why.”

Stefano jumped up quickly.“Sorry, guys, Elise is calling me.Just a second.”He walked away, and I shook my head.

“When is that guy going to get it through his thick head that he likes Elise as more than a friend?”

“As more than a sister,” Sergio said, and we all started laughing.

“That’s so gross to think about.Good thing you never married Sienna, Dad,” Santino said, and my dad shook his head.

“Sienna is my best friend. She has always been there for you boys, and she’s always been there for me.”

“And what does she think about you meeting with Patti tomorrow?”I stared at him.

He pressed his lips together.“Well, she doesn’t think it’s the best idea, but—”

“Oh my God, guys. We’ve got to go.”Stefano sounded frantic as he walked back to the table.

“What is it?”I asked.“Is everything okay?”

“No,” he said.“It’s not. We’ve got to get to the hospital.”

I jumped up and put my hand on his shoulder.“Oh my gosh, is Elise okay? What happened?”

“It’s not Elise. It’s Sienna.”He looked over at my dad.“She’s been in an accident.”The blood drained from my dad’s face, and everyone else jumped up.

“Come on.Let’s go,” my dad said in the most authoritative voice I’d heard since we were little kids.

“What hospital is she at?”

“Elise is going to text over the information.”We all headed outside, and Stefano looked at me with a worried expression on his face.

“It’s bad, Sam.She might not make it.”
