“I don’t know what else there could be?”
“Like a real snog,” Gabriella said.
And I looked over at her and laughed.“You know what I’m talking about,” I said with a wink, and she giggled.
“No one’s ever done something like this for me before.”Valentina looked at the papers in the folder again.“You gave up all that money for me?”
“I’d do it again in a heartbeat,” I said.
“But didn’t your family need that money?Didn't …?”
“It’s fine.I was able to work some things out.”I hadn’t told anyone about the secret stash of fifty grand I'd been saving since I was young.It was money that I’d set aside for a rainy day if the very worst happened in my life.And I’d known right away that this was the time to use it.I’d put that money back into the bank account to cover my dad’s rent, and then I’d used some of the money Hamilton had given me to pay a year’s lease.And the rest of the money was in a check in an envelope in the folder.Valentina just hadn’t seen it yet.I wanted her to use that money to furnish her puppy store.I didn’t want one cent from Hamilton Ford.I knew that would forever taint our relationship.And going forward, I never wanted Valentina to doubt how much she meant to me.
“Can I ask you something, Sam?”Valentina said, staring at me for a couple of seconds.
“You can ask me anything in the world.”
“If I open this doggy café …?”
“Yeah?”
“Will you be my first barista?”
I started laughing then.I pulled her into my arms and kissed her passionately.And I could hear Gabriella clapping from the side.“Isn’t true love absolutely spectacular?”she said wistfully.
I pulled away from Valentina and smiled at Gabriella.“I’m sure you’ll find your true love soon.”
“I don’t know,” she said.“Maybe.Hopefully.”
“You will,” Valentina said with a smile.“I promise, I’m going to help you.You deserve the very best.”
“I don’t know.I feel like you already got the best,” I said to Valentina, and she burst out laughing.
“Sam Valenti you’re too much.You know that, right?”
“I do, but I’m only that way because of you.”I kissed her on the forehead and grabbed her hands.
“Would you two like to go and get a drink?”
“You two should go without me,” Gabriella said, quickly shaking her head.“I’m just glad that this all worked out so well.”
“No,” I said.I released Valentina’s hand and walked over to Gabriella.I grabbed her hands and squeezed.“I know Valentina has been your best friend for years, and you don’t really know me, but I think you’re an amazing woman, Gabriella.And trust me when I say whatever man ends up with you will be the second happiest man in the world.”I looked back at Valentina.“Because I’m already the first.”
“I sure hope so,” Gabriella said wistfully.
I smiled at her and gave her a huge hug.“Thank you for everything, Gabriella.I know none of this could have happened without you, and for that, you have my eternal love.”
“You’re so sweet, Sam,” she said, blushing.“I just knew that Valentina really loved you, and I figured if you were going to call me, you probably really loved her as well, so I wanted to see if we could get this to work.And I’m glad I did.What you did was so selfless and kind, and you’re a great guy.”
“Thanks.You want to go and get that drink now?”
“If you’re sure I won’t be intruding on the two of you?”
“We’ve got the rest of our lives together.”I smiled at Valentina, then looked back at Gabriella.“I’d love to have you with us to celebrate tonight.”
