It was so hard for me to leave Valentina at the end of the night.When she asked if I wanted to go back to her place, I wanted nothing more, but I didn’t want her to even think for one minute that this was about sex or our physical chemistry.I loved her, and I wanted to marry her one day, and I wanted her to have no doubt in her mind that this was something special and real.And even though the evening had gone spectacularly, I didn’t want to push my luck.
I gave her a kiss on the cheek, then turned to Gabriella and gave her a big hug.“Thank you again, Gabriella.”
“Thank you, Sam.I had fun tonight.And I know you two probably wanted to be together alone but thank you for including me.I didn’t want to be by myself tonight.”
“Any time you want to hang out, just let me know,” I said, and I gave her a kiss on the cheek.I stepped back and looked at Valentina and Gabriella.“I’ve called you an Uber.It should be here in a couple of minutes.”
“You didn’t have to do that,” Valentina said.“We could have caught a cab or …”
“No,” I pressed my lips together, “I’m not too happy with cabs right now.”
“Why not?”Valentina was confused.
“Sienna, Elise’s mom, she’s in the hospital.”
“What?”Valentina’s jaw dropped, and she looked mortified.“Oh my gosh, is she okay?”
“She’s going to be fine”—I nodded—”but she was hit by a cab, and well, we weren’t sure what was going to happen.”
“Sam, you should be at the hospital.You should be with her.”
“I was there, and I’ll go back.But once I found out she was okay, I knew I had to see you.I knew I had to fix this.”
“You should have told me.We didn’t have to go out tonight.We …”
“I wasn’t going to let you walk away from me without us spending time together,” I said softly.“I want to show you that you are the world to me.You mean everything to me.”
“But Sienna, she’s like your second mom.”
“And all my brothers are there, my dad is there, and Elise is there, and I’m going to go now.”I grabbed her by the shoulders and brought her into me.I stared down into her beautiful hazel eyes and kissed her lips softly.“Valentina Ford, I’ve messed up many things in my life, and I’m sure I’ll mess up many things in the future, but one thing I don’t want to mess up is us.I am lucky enough that you have given me not one but two second chances, and I’m not going to throw that away.I am going to work every single day to let you know how much I love you and how much I value you and how much I support you.”
“You’re going to make the best barista,” she said with a wicked look, and I laughed.
I pulled her into my arms, and she wrapped her hands around my neck and pressed her body against me.My hands ran up and down her back toward her ass and squeezed.
I heard Gabriella giggling next to us.“Get a room, guys.”
I pulled away from Valentina reluctantly and smiled at Gabriella.“Sorry, I didn’t mean to make this R-rated.”
“Trust me, Sam, that is PG-13,” she said with a laugh.
“Good to know.Good to know.”I smiled at her.
I heard a beep and looked up.“That’s the Uber.You text me when you get home, okay?”
“I will,” Valentina said.She gave me a quick kiss.“Thanks, Sam.I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“I sure hope so.”I watched as they got into the back of the Uber, and then it pulled away.I smiled, staring up at the sky.I wasn’t sure how I’d gotten to be so lucky, but I was thankful that Valentina was so pure-hearted and so sweet that she’d given me another chance.
I headed back toward the hospital with a pep in my step that I hadn’t felt in years.Everything was going to be okay.I could feel it in my bones.And while the Fix-It Agency didn’t have the capital in the bank that would allow me to go to the police academy, I didn’t mind.Just one day at a time.I couldn’t fixate on anything else.
My phone started ringing, and I checked the screen to see who was calling.I didn’t recognize the number and wasn’t sure if I was going to answer it, but I finally decided to, just in case it was the hospital.“Hello?”
“Sam,” the deep, soft, familiar voice sounded.
“Yeah?Who is this?”I pretended I didn’t know.
