CHAPTER6

“Here are your nachos.”I handed them to Gabriella, and she smiled up at me.

“Thank you, Sam.What do I owe you?”

“Nothing.”I shook my head.I looked around but didn’t see Valentina or Shane.“Where’s Valentina?”

“I think she went to show Shane where the restroom was or something.”She shrugged.“Sergio was just telling me about the fact that he got into Harvard and Columbia and Princeton.”

“Yeah.”I nodded.“Sergio is the smart-ass of the family.”

“Hey,” he said, shaking his head, “just because I’m intelligent doesn’t mean I’m a smart-ass.”

“That’s really cool,” Gabriella said.“And what about you, Santino?”

“I’m a good-for-nothing,” he said, grinning at her, “though I could be persuaded to—”

“Hey, there you are.”Valentina stopped next to me and looked up at me.Her cheeks had a slight tinge of red in them.

“Hey, what’s going on?Your boyfriend make his way out of the toilet okay?”

“He’s not my boyfriend, and he’s fine.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. He’s just your friend with benefits, then?”I paused.“Wait, there are no benefits.”

“Very funny, Sam.I told you that in confidence. This place is like another planet.”Shane stepped next to us, and I rolled my eyes.

Sergio looked at him.“Hey, what’s happening, man?”

“Not much.Nice to meet you.I’m Shane.I’m—”

“Yeah, cool.”Sergio reached over and grabbed some of the nachos.“Dude, I can’t believe you only got one serving. There are like a billion of us here.”

“Well, you can always go and get some yourself,” I said to Sergio, shaking my head.“I’m not your dad.”

“Yeah, well, you sure handle the money strings like you are.”He started laughing and so did Santino.

“You guys are idiots.Has Stefano been by yet?”

“Not yet,” Elise said, holding up her phone.“I was just texting with him, and he said he will come up in a couple of minutes.”She looked down at her phone again.“Oh, it looks like Betsy’s here as well.”

“Betsy’s still in the picture?”I said, shaking my head.

Valentina looked up at me with a curious expression.“Who’s Betsy?”

“Betsy is Stefano’s latest woman of the week,” Elise said, shaking her head.“I don’t know how well you know these Valenti brothers, but none of them dates a woman for very long.”

“Hey, that’s not true.”

“Yes, it is,” she said.“We’ve got Sam here who only does twenty-nine days.”

“What?”Valentina said, blinking.“What does that mean?”

“I call them my twenty-nine-dayers.”I smiled.

“Twenty-nine-dayers?”She gave me a look.

“Well, there’s a saying that something becomes a habit at thirty days.I don’t want a woman to think that seeing me is going to be her new habit, so after twenty-nine days, I no longer see them.”Valentina burst out laughing, which was the last thing I’d expected.“You think that’s funny?”
