“I’m fine,” I said.“Plus, real men know how to fight.Real men know how to knock down.”Her eyes widened, and I stared at her lips.I leaned forward and whispered in her ear, “You want to give me a good luck kiss before I go get ready?”

Licking her lips slowly, she darted her eyes to Shane and then back to me.“I can't,” she said.

“Why not?”

“Because.”

“You want to, though, don’t you?”She chewed on her lower lip, and I grinned.I knew she wanted me, and that was all I cared about.“Okay, Stefano, come on.Show me where I have to go.”Elise sighed as I left.“I’ll be fine.”

“I hope so,” she said.“I really need you to be the voice of reason here, Sam.We really need to stop Stefano from—”

“Elise, it’s okay.I know you feel like our sister, but we don’t need you to protect us.”She pressed her lips together, and I knew I’d hurt her feelings.“I appreciate it, though. You know I love you.”

“I know,” she said.

“I'll see you guys later.”I waved and followed Stefano to the back of the gym.

“Whoa, you didn’t tell me they were knockouts.”

“Uh, I did tell you that Valentina was cute.”

“Yeah, but you didn’t tell me quite how cute she was.”

“What are you talking about?”Betsy said, running behind us.I looked back at her, pressed my lips together, and then looked at my brother.

“Dude, really? What are you doing with this girl?”

“She makes me pasta every day.”He shrugged.“And she gives me a blow job every night, and she goes home without me having to tell her. What more can I ask for?”

“You don’t even like her.”

“I like her pasta. You know, she went to the Culinary Institute.”

“Stefano, come on.”

“What can I say?She’s cute.”

I shook my head.“This is ridiculous. You know that, right?”

“Betsy, I’m going to take Sam to the back. Why don’t you go and sit with my brothers and the others?”

“I don’t really know them, though.I just want to take care of you.I—”

“Betsy,” he said, shaking his head, “please.”

“Okay.Whatever you say, Stefano.”She stopped, and I watched as she walked idly to a random seat.

“She didn’t even go back to the others, you know.”

“What can I say?I can’t make her do what she doesn’t want to do.”

“Stefano, really?”

“Fine, I’m going to break up with her next week. She just makes the best pesto sauce I’ve ever had in my life,” he said.

“Oh my God.You’re such a douchebag.”

“And you’re not?You’re a frigging …” He paused.“Anyway, I’m surprised you agreed to fight.”
