“Yeah.”I jumped up quickly so she couldn’t see the screen.Then, I opened the message and read it.

I chewed down on my lower lip.Fuck, I’d been getting so carried away that I’d almost forgotten Valentina was a case.And she was certainly not someone I could make love to.I was supposed to get her to fall for me so she could dump Shane.And I was almost there, but then I would have to break her heart.And I knew that if I did that after sex, I’d be a bastard.I didn’t want to be that person.And I also knew that Hamilton Ford would likely have me killed if he knew I’d been with her intimately.A couple of kisses were okay, but he wouldn’t like it if I fucked his baby girl.I responded quickly.

After I sent the message, I turned off my phone and staggered back to the bed, rubbing my forehead.
“Oh no, is everything okay?What’s wrong?”Valentina sat up.I could see that her top was off, and she was only wearing a bra.
“Fuck,” I mumbled under my breath.“I’m okay.I’m just really not feeling good.I think I’m just going to go to sleep.”
“Oh, okay.”She sounded disappointed.“I guess I can leave and just make sure that—”
“No.”I sat next to her on the bed and grabbed her hand.“You can stay.We just can’t do anything, you know?”
“Okay,” she said.“Can I get you anything?Anything to drink, anything to eat, or …?”
“I’m good.Thank you.”
“It’s okay,” she said.She leaned over to kiss me, and I stared at her lips for a couple of seconds, conflicted.I kissed her back and then pulled away and turned onto my side.
“You have a good night, Valentina.”
“You too, Sam.”She sounded disappointed, but she most probably didn’t know how disappointed and hard I felt.This situation was already getting out of hand.I couldn’t let it get any more out of hand.I wanted her to fall for me.I needed her to fall for me, but I didn’t want to break her heart.And I certainly didn’t want to break my own either.
