CHAPTER8

My phone started ringing early in the morning, and I groaned as I opened my eyes and reached for it.“Do you want me to get that for you?”Valentina’s soft voice sounded in my ear, and I stilled as I looked over my shoulder and gazed at her.I’d almost forgotten that she was in bed with me.

“No.Thanks, though,” I said as I grabbed it.She rubbed her eyes and sleepily brushed her hair away from her face.I couldn’t help but think how pretty she looked in the morning.“It’s my brother.”I held up the phone.

“Which one?”she asked with a small laugh.

“Stefano, the fighter.”

“Give him my regards.”She giggled.“I mean, maybe you don’t want to tell him I’m here, so you don’t have to.”

“It’s fine,” I said, answering the phone.“Hey.What’s up, bro?”

“Not much. How are you feeling this morning?”

“Like I got beat up last night. How are you?”

“Not bad.I won.”

“Congratulations.That’s awesome.”

“Yeah, I’m glad.”He sighed.

“Okay, what's wrong? If you won, shouldn’t you be super excited and happy?”

“I am happy about the fact that I won, but something’s come up.”

“Okay. And that something is the reason you had to wake me up at”—I looked at the time on my phone—“seven o’clock in the morning?”

“Hey, it’s not that early.”

“Dude, we were out until two a.m.It’s early.”

“Well, how do you think I feel?”

“Why are you up so early?Did Betsy not give you the blow job of your life last night?”

“I ended things with her last night. You made me feel bad.”

“Hey, I didn’t mean to make you feel bad.I just wanted to express my feelings.”

“Not right now, Sam,” he said, sighing deeply again.

“Hey, what’s wrong? Are you okay?Do I need to find someone and beat them up?Who I got to kill?”

“No, it’s nothing like that. It’s …” He paused.

“What? You’re making me very nervous, Stefano. What’s going on?”

“It’s Patti. She’s back.”I froze at the mention of my mom’s name.

“What are you talking about?”

“She sent me a message. She found me on Facebook.”

“Patti Valenti?”I said slowly.

“Yes, Sam.Our mom, she’s back.”
