CHAPTER11

Ibanged on the hotel room door and waited for someone to answer.I could hear the TV inside, but no one was coming.I banged two more times.Still nothing.

“Open up!”I shouted.I heard footsteps, and then the door opened.Shane stood there in a pair of black Snoopy boxer shorts and stared at me.

“What are you doing here?”he said, looking confused.I pushed past him and looked around the hotel room.

“Where’s Valentina?”

“I don’t know.She’s getting ready for—”

“Valentina. It’s me, Sam.You can come out now. It’s okay.”The bathroom door opened, and I watched her walk out timidly. She was wearing a white dress, and her hair hung long down her back. She smiled at me awkwardly.

“Come here,” I said. She walked over to me quickly.

“What’s going on?”Shane said, looking annoyed.

“Valentina messaged me to come pick her up.You wouldn’t let her leave.”I turned toward him, glaring.

“What do you mean, I wouldn’t let her leave? We were just about to consummate our relationship.”

“Valentina didn’t want to consummate her relationship with you.”

“She was just saying that. That’s what women do.She was fine doing it in India. What’s a couple of months early?”He rolled his eyes.“It reminds me of this poem I wrote. When one ought to think about—”

“Oh, shut up,” I said.“Your poetry sucks.”

“Excuse me?”He looked affronted.“How dare you?”

“How dare I what?”

“You thugs think you can talk to me about great literature?”

I burst out laughing.“You’re not serious. You don’t actually think you’re a good poet, do you?”I turned toward Valentina.“Valentina, you need to be honest with this dork. His poetry sucks.”

She pressed her lips together.“I’m sorry, Shane, but …”

“Valentina, what is going on?I thought we had something.I thought you got me.”

“I …” She pressed her lips together.“I’m sorry, but I don’t appreciate you not letting me leave.”

“I thought we were playing a game.I thought you liked it rough.”

“Excuse me?”I said, staring at him.I grabbed him by the shirt collar.“Who do you think you’re talking to?”

“What?I was just explaining myself.”

“Sam, don’t,” Valentina said from behind me.“We can go.I’m okay now.”

“Listen to me, Shane. If I ever hear that you have bothered Valentina again, and when I say bothered, I mean, if you text her, if you call her, or if you even see her on the street and say hello, I will be back, and I will bust up your pretty little face and your lips. You will not be able to do any spoken word poetry for a good couple of months because all your teeth will be knocked out of your mouth, and no one will understand what you’re saying.”

“I told you he’s a thug,” Shane said, looking behind me at Valentina.“This is really the sort of dog you want to lie in bed with?”

I looked back at Valentina, and she rolled her eyes.“He’s more of a man than you would ever be, Shane.”I felt smug at her words.

“Come on.Are you okay?”

“Yes,” she said.“Let me just get my purse.”
