“Oh?I haven’t heard about it.”

“Yeah, Sergio booked it.He’ll give us more information tomorrow.”

“Fine.Okay, I’ll see you at the gym tomorrow.”

“Okay.”

“And Sam?”

“Yes, Stefano?”

“If you don’t make it, let’s meet at the diner on Cornelia Street at eight thirty.I’ll tell Mom to meet us there.”

“Fine,” I said and hung up.

I made it to the diner at eight thirty.I chuckled to myself as I stared at Stefano’s text messages. He knew me better than I knew myself.

He’d gotten to the gym at four thirty, and the texts had started at five.I hadn’t seen any of them until seven thirty when I woke up.I stopped outside the diner and took a deep breath before I made my way inside.Stefano had already texted me and warned me that Patti would be there.I looked around and saw my brother seated in a booth in the far back.

I could see a blond lady sitting on the other side of the booth.I took a deep breath.

“Hey, Stefano, what’s up?”

“Sam.”He stood and hugged me.He nodded toward the lady.“Sam, this is Patti.”

“Hey, son.”She stood, and her blue eyes looked me over. She looked absolutely beautiful. She’d barely aged. And all of a sudden, I felt like a little boy.

“Hi,” I said, nodding.

“Can I get a hug?”she said.

“No.”I shook my head and sat next to Stefano.“Did you guys order already?”

“Not yet.We were waiting on you,” Stefano said quickly.

“Okay.Well, I don’t have much time, so …” I looked over at Patti.“What do you want?”

“Well, it’s good to see you again, too, son.”

I took a deep breath.“I don’t know what you think is going to happen here.If this is going to be like some reunion special that you see on TV.But I don’t know you.Stefano doesn’t know you.We don’t miss you.We don’t care about you.And we’re only here because we want you to stop bothering us.So what the hell do you want?”

She looked at me with hurt in her eyes.I could see her blinking back the tears.

“Sam, really?”Stefano sounded sad.And I looked over at him.

“No, I’ve got to be honest here, Stefano.”

“I know, but she’s still …” He bit down on his lower lip.

“I’m still your mom, Sam.”Patti leaned forward.“And I still love you.I never stopped loving you.”

“You left my three brothers and me when we were just kids with our dad, who had absolutely no idea how to raise four boys. You don’t get to say sorry. You don’t get to say you missed us.You don’t get to say anything. What do you want?”

“I want to see Santino and Sergio.I’ve missed you all.I want—” She sighed.“I want to see your dad.I want Lorenzo back.”

I stared at her for a few seconds and then started laughing. When I glanced over at Stefano, he looked equally as shocked.

“Is this a joke? You can’t seriously think that Dad will take you back again.”
