“I know who it is.What can I do for you, Sam?”
“I wanted to—”
“No, you can’t come over,” she cut me off.
“That’s not what I was going to ask,” I said with a slight chuckle.
“It’s not funny,” she said.“I’m going to let you go.”
“No, wait, please.I’m not laughing because I think it’s funny.I’m laughing because I’m nervous, and it’s just been a really long day.”
“Okay.And so, what did you want to tell me?”
“I wanted to apologize to you.I know you don’t believe me, but I wasn’t going to go home with that woman.I really wasn’t.Even before you called me, I had already decided.”
“But you were flirting with her, right?And you had thought about going home with her.”
“Valentina, you were on a date with Shane.”
“He was my friend.You already knew that we’d never had sex.You knew that.”
“I know.And I wasn’t going to sleep with her.I just …” I sighed.“I guess I got a little bit jealous when I heard that you were on a date with Shane and reacted without thinking.”
“You were jealous?”she said softly.
“Yes, I was.I know that’s stupid because we’re not dating or in a relationship.And I had no reason to be.”
“No, I think it’s cute,” she said softly.Then whispered, “I can’t believe you were jealous.”I could hear the lightness in her voice.
“Why, does that make you happy?”I smiled, happy that her tone had changed.
“And you’re right.I was on a date with Shane, so I really don’t have any reason to be jealous.But—”
“Aw, so you were jealous too?”I knew I shouldn’t be happy at that, but for some reason, it made me feel like a million dollars.
“Obviously, I was jealous, and that was why I told you to leave.That’s why I felt so bad about everything.”
“I thought you just changed your mind about being attracted to me.”I laughed.“I knew that hadn’t been the case, but I didn’t want to sound cocky.”
“Very funny, Sam.You know you’re gorgeous.”
“So I was thinking,” I said quickly, wanting to see her in person but not sure if she would agree.
“What were you thinking?”
“Well, I wondered what you were doing for dinner tonight.”
“Tonight?”She paused.
“It’s just that my brothers and I are going to a family friend’s house for dinner, and I would love for you to come.”
“I have plans with Gabriella and Ella tonight,” she said.“I don’t think I could make it.”
“They’re more than welcome to come as well.”
“Really?”She sounded confused and surprised.
“Yeah.Sienna’s like my mom,” I said.
