CHAPTER3

“Shall we get shots?”Gabriella shimmied back and forth in front of me.“My treat.”

“I’m okay, thanks.”I shook my head and laughed as she pouted.Valentina shook her head as she danced with the bride-to-be next to us.

“Come on, Sam.Let’s have fun.”

“I am having fun, thanks.”I smiled at her, loving her energy.

“She wants us all to be drunk.”Valentina grinned.“But she’s sleeping over at my place tonight, so I don’t really want her throwing up in my bed.”

“If I had a boyfriend, he’d take care of me.”Gabriella looked sad for a few seconds.“But fuck guys, I can live my best life without them.”

“Yes, we can.”Valentina waved her hands in the air and then started jumping up and down as the music changed.“I love this song.”

“Oh yeah?”I listened for a few seconds, but I wasn’t sure who it was.

“Doja Cat is amazeballs.”She moved her hips in time with the music, grabbed Gabriella’s hands, and they danced together.I was having a fun time, but I was no closer to getting Valentina to dump her boyfriend than I was when I first arrived.I felt my phone vibrating in my back pocket and pulled it out.

Stefano:Any luck?

Sam: Shouldn’t you be at the gym training or something?

Stefano: I’m waiting on Elise to come over.

Sam: Oh, okay, tell her I said hi.

Stefano: Soooo?

Sam: So what?

Stefano: You met Ms.Fugly yet?

I staredat his message and started laughing.I couldn’t believe that my brothers and I had assumed Valentina would be ugly. They would absolutely not believe how beautiful she was.Not that I was going to tell them.I didn’t want them all trying their shot and making it a competition. As much as I loved my brothers, I didn’t want them involved with Valentina.

“So, shots?”Gabriella asked me again, and I nodded.

“Sure, let’s do it.”

“Just one,” Valentina added, and Gabriella rolled her eyes while adjusting the straps of her dress.

“She can be a right bossy boots when she wants to be.”

“So I’m seeing.”I laughed as we made our way back over to the bar.I waited for the bartender to serve us and looked around at the crowd of millennials dancing and taking photos of themselves.Valentina pulled her phone out of her navy velvet purse and started smiling. She showed the screen to Gabriella, who started giggling.

“Ooh, helovesyou,” Gabriella gushed as she read whatever was on the screen.

“I don’t know about that.”Valentina typed something into her phone and then noticed me staring at her.“My quasi-boyfriend, Shane, just sent me a special photo.”

“Oh, can I see it?”I wondered what he’d sent her that was so special.

“Sure.”She pulled her phone out again and passed it to me.I stared at the screen and tried not to burst out laughing. There was a photo of a dried-up flower petal, and the text message below it said: When I’m not with you, I dry up like a dead flower.I couldn’t believe he thought that was romantic. No wonder Valentina’s father wanted her out of that relationship.I didn’t know Shane, but I could already tell he was a loser.Valentina and Gabriella looked at me expectantly as if I should be impressed. That was when I knew I needed to step it up.I was Sam Valenti, and I wasn’t a bitch.I wasn’t going to lie to these women and pretend that I thought it was cute.It was like a bad joke. Was romance that dead that photos of dried flowers were something to become excited about?

“That’s romantic to you?”I raised an eyebrow and gazed at them both.“I can tell neither of you has ever been with a real man.”

“What?”Valentina’s eyes narrowed.“What do you mean?”

“I mean, a real man doesn’t send his girl a photo of a dead flower petal.”
