CHAPTER22

“Hi, Hamilton. What’s going on?”I was slightly nervous that something had happened to Valentina, and I held my breath.

“Nothing, but I wanted to thank you for a job well done.”

“Sorry, what?”

“I’ve got that hundred grand for you.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Valentina just came home, crying, saying that men were jerks.”He sounded happy.“Whatever you did, you did it beautifully.I’m impressed.”I pressed my lips together. It didn’t feel good hearing those words.I wasn’t impressed with my actions.

“I can deposit a hundred grand into your bank account tonight.”

“Okay.Thanks,” I said.

“I didn’t think you could do the job, I’ll be honest, but you went above and beyond and did it quickly.I don’t know what you said or did to Valentina, but she’s absolutely broken right now.I’m going to have a dinner next week and bring Conner over.”He chuckled.“Hopefully, he’ll get her smiling again.”

“Yeah, I’m sure he will. Was there anything else?”

“No, I just wanted to thank you.I’ll be sure to recommend the Valenti Fix-It Agency to any of my friends who have any issues they need taken care of.”

“Okay.Well, I mean, I don’t know that I did that great of a job.Maybe she’s upset for another reason.Maybe she—”

“Oh no.She’s really upset. She and Gabriella.I’m not sure if you met Gabriella, her best friend.”

“I did.”I pressed my lips together.

“Well, they’re going to do karaoke tonight. And the only time they go to do karaoke is when one of them breaks a heart because neither one of them can sing.”He laughed.“But anyway, thanks.I really appreciate a job well done.”

“You’re welcome, sir.Is that it?”

“That’s it, Sam.You have a good day.”

I hung up the phone and clenched my fists together.I felt like absolute shit.I’d hurt her.I’d really hurt her.And now I didn’t know what I was supposed to do.The money felt like blood money.

“You okay?”My dad looked at me with narrowed eyes.

“I’m fine.”

“Who was that call from, your brother?”

“No, it was just about a job.”

“Okay. And the job went well, or …”

“It went real well, Dad.We’ve got some extra money coming to the bank account, so everything will be right as rain. You don’t have to worry about getting evicted.Okay? But we need to get you in a better position for next time.”

“Cool.”

He walked over to me and grabbed my shoulders.“I know I’ve put a lot of pressure on you, Sam, and I’m sorry. You shouldn’t have to take care of the family.”

“You did your best, Dad.”

“I’m just doing what I have to do.You know, my dad was in the Mafia.I was in the Mafia. And you never get out of the Mafia. My entire life, that’s all I knew. But when I looked at you boys, I knew that I couldn’t afford a life of crime anymore. And I didn’t have any other skills and …” He sighed.“I did my best, son.”

“I know, Dad.”
