“You’ll make a good dad one day if you decide to have kids.”

“Thanks, Dad.”

I smiled, lifted my hand, and waved as I exited.I’d never wanted kids.I’d never even thought about having kids.I never wanted to get married.I had never been in love.I’d never even been emotionally connected to a woman. At twenty-nine days, I’d broken up with them and moved on with my life.I’d never felt any regret.Never felt jealousy, not until Valentina.

It was funny how someone you hadn’t known, even months ago, could come into your life and could change everything you thought you knew about life and yourself in the blink of an eye.I hadn’t thought I was capable of loving. The word made me freeze inside.Love.What was love?It was something for fairy tales and books and movies. It wasn’t something that existed.Yet my heart, the way I felt right now, I knew Valentina wasn’t the only one hurting.I was as well. And I deserved it.I deserved the pain because I was the one who had done this to myself and to her.

I pulled out my phone and called Sergio.“What are you doing?”I said as soon as he answered.

“Not much.Santino and I were just playing video games.”

“We’re going out.”

“What do you mean we’re going out?I told you, we’re playing video games. We just ordered a pizza.”

“There’s something I got to tell you guys. And we need to do some karaoke.”

“What?”he said.

“Sergio, listen to me.”

“What?”

“I need you to call Gabriella.”

“Ain’t no way, man.”

“I need you to figure out where she’s going to do karaoke tonight.”

“No, I don’t want her to think that—”

“Sergio!”I cut him off.

“Yes?”

“It’s important.It’s for a case.”

“Fine,” he said.

“Good.”I smiled to myself.“Text me the address when you have it, and I’ll meet you guys in an hour.”

“Whatever, bro.”

“Thanks,” I said and hung up.

I’ lied to him to get the address, but I knew if I told him that I just wanted to go and see Valentina and try to talk to her, he wouldn’t understand. It had to be for a case.Us Valenti brothers were business-oriented.When it came to business, we did what we had to do, no matter our personal feelings about the situation.I’d always thought that was a good trait to have, but now I wasn’t so sure. Now I wasn’t sure that business should be number one in life.

As I was walking, I saw a lady selling flowers on the side of the street, and I stopped.“How much for a bouquet?”I asked.

“Fifteen for one or twenty-five for two.”

“I’ll get two, please.”

“Okay.”

I handed her two twenty-dollar bills, and she scrambled around for change. As I took in her appearance and her ratty clothes, I realized that she needed the money more than I did.“Keep the change. It’s a tip,” I said with a smile.

Her eyes lit up.“Thank you. That really means a lot to me.”

“It’s okay.I can afford to lose it right now,” I said.I grabbed the two bouquets and nodded at her.“You have a good day, ma’am.”

“You too, sir.God bless you.”

I smiled at her thankfully.I hadn’t heard those words in a long time. And I knew that at this moment, after everything that had happened and all that I’d done, I needed God’s blessings a lot.
