“And yet, what?”

“It’s like he’s holding on to a secret that he’s alluding to but won’t fully reveal. There’s heart and emotion in his lyrics, but the soul is missing.”

“What’s the difference between heart and soul?”

He smiles at me like he used to when I was a little girl and curious about everything. It’s an endearing sort of look.“Heart can invoke emotion in the person who hears it.But soul is what makes a song gut you.Soul is what drives a song to be played on repeat because it hits every part of you—mentally, emotionally, physically. It’s not just conveying an emotion that tugs at your heart.Soul takes the innermost parts of you and reveals them to the world.

“It’s my belief that it’s his soul driving his songwriting, but he keeps the truth held back so all we get in the final product is heart. You can make a career with heart, but you become a legend when you reveal your soul.”

I stare at my dad, momentarily in awe of all the passion he just spewed all over the place.I’ve never heard him talk about music like this, although I guess I’ve never really asked him these questions before.

“Do you think he can do it?Reveal his soul?”

Dad nods.“If he can let himself be fully vulnerable.I’m curious about the woman he writes about. It’s no secret he’s never been in a serious relationship—at least not one that was ever made public. But his songs aren’t about a one-night stand. His songs are about one woman.I just can’t figure out what it’ll take to tap into that love he’s got for her and get him to spill his guts in his music.”

He gets a twinkle in his eye.“But we’ve just started, so I’ve got time.”

We share a smile knowing my dad always gets what he wants when it comes to the bands he works with. For the first time, I’m envious of that confidence.I wish I could be so sure that I could get what I want.

But what I want—or more accuratelywho—seems more impossible than ever.
