“You really don’t get it, do you?She already has to work twice as hard because she’s Decker’s daughter.Everyone thinks she has it easybecauseshe’s Decker’s daughter, but it’s always been the opposite.People think she gets things handed to her on a silver platter, so they don’t take her seriously. She’s worked her ass off her entire life to prove she’s capable of doing it without her dad’s connections. Now she gets this job, and all people will see is that she’s working for her boyfriend.”

Anger spikes my blood.“That’s bullshit.”

“I agree, but that’s how it is.Or that’s how it’ll appear. It’ll look like she got this job because of you and didn’t actually earn it even though you and I both know she’s more than capable of kicking ass.Unfortunately, your industry is all about perception. And think about how it looks that you hired her when she isn’t even close to finishing her degree yet.”

Fuck.

Before she gets a chance to say more, my phone rings with a number I’ve been waiting to hear from.

“I wanna talk more about this and make sure there’s minimal blowback on Tamsin if she works for us.If she wants this opportunity, I won’t stop her, but I also don’t want her to be labeled something she’s not.But I really gotta take this call.”

Rikki nods in understanding and gestures for me to go ahead.I answer the phone and make my way out front, away from all the party guests.

“Miles? It’s Greg Danvers.”Greg is the PI I hired to find out as much about Tamsin’s rapist as possible.

“Hey Greg, what’ve you found?”

“Well, I think I foundhim.”

All the blood rushes from my face as I let those words sink in.I thought it would be a long shot.I mean, I only had a vague description of him from a party that happened years ago.Tamsin didn’t know his name, and she assumed he was a senior but said it was possible he was a past student who’d been invited.

I lower my voice.“Are you sure?”

“I’ve got a few more things I want to check out before I can confirm, but I felt confident enough to give you a call.”

A shout comes from inside and voices grow louder.Someone’s coming.“That’s great news.I can’t talk right now, but let me know when you have the confirmation.”

“Will do.”

He hangs up right as the front door opens, and I spin around to Tamsin’s smiling face.

“There you are.”I don’t know what she sees on my face, but she frowns and steps closer.

“Everything okay?”

I offer her a reassuring nod while I try to calm the excitement in my gut.I can’t tell her until it’s confirmed.“Everything’s fine.”

I usher her back inside, but for the rest of the party my mind is spinning at all the possibilities. If Greg really found him, then that means we can finally make him pay for what he did to her.

But most of all, it means Tamsin can get closure.
