“You’re welcome...wait, are you crying?”

“Not anymore.”

“Trina, I—”

“Emily bought Bradford, Ren. She had me fired this morning.”

She heard him inhale sharply. “Fuck, Trina, I’m so sorry. I know she did this because of me.”

“She did this because she’s Emily. It’s not...” She couldn’t finish the sentence, though.

Because it had been about him, and she didn’t want to lie.

“She’s just Emily.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Wish I hadn’t signed a no-compete clause that keeps me from doing marketing work for a year.”

“Trina—”

“I have a plan,” she cut him off. “At least for your project. Judith takes over from here. They can’t prove that I’m helping in any way. Your reopening will go off without a hitch.”

“Except there is one.”

“Oh, I’ll be there.”

“Good,” he said softly. “Good. What are you doing today?”

“Wallowing in self-pity and contemplating watching old movies. You?”

“Not allowing you to wallow.”

“I’ll be fine, Ren, really. Besides, I cry when I get angry, and I’m not a graceful crier. Justin is coming by after work.”

“Okay, then tomorrow.”

She sniffled and the scent of the daisies reached her, making her smile. “What’s tomorrow?”

“Beautiful. Sunny. I don’t have a project lined up, so I was going to ride. Think you’ll feel up to it?”

Would she?

She didn’t get the chance to know.

That afternoon, she received the news that Emmett Torrence had passed away.
