CHAPTER 30

“Are you there, honey?”

Katrina’s mother’s question caught her attention after being hit with the news. “Yeah, I’m here.”

“As friends of the family, we should be sure to go to the service.”

Friends of the family.

The same family who’d kept Lorenzo’s daughter a secret for years.

The same family who’d taken Katrina’s job and flushed it down the drain.

“I...Mom, I have some news for you, too. I was fired from my job.”

“Oh my goodness, why?”

“Because Emily Torrence is a vindictive bitch.”

“Katrina Louise Carter, I didn’t raise you to speak like that. And what does Emily have to do with your job?”

“They bought Bradford. And she knew I’d helped Lorenzo out with his logo and marketing strategies. I get it, I broke my contract. But she did this out of spite.”

“It’s because of Miranda, isn’t it?”

Katrina fell silent.

“Oh, honey, I’ve known since I first laid eyes on her. I’m not sure how you even speak to him knowing what he did when he was with you.”

“It’s not my story to tell, Mom.” And that was the truth. “But I need you to understand that he’s not responsible. Okay, she’s his daughter, but...”

When her words trailed off, Mrs. Carter gasped. “No. Surely not.”

“Mom—”

“Mrs. Torrence may have been a bit of a gold digger, but...no, she couldn’t have.”

“She did.” Katrina felt the tears for Lorenzo’s shattered childhood creep back in, threaten to consume her. “She did, and that’s all I’m going to say.”

“Does he need help?”

“I’m sorry?”

“Trina, does he need help?”

“He’s in therapy.”

“That’s a relief, but that’s not what I’m asking. Does he need help fighting for her?”

Katrina nibbled on her bottom lip a moment before answering. “Yes. He has the proof she’s his, but now with Mr. Torrence being gone—”

“He’ll have to fight Emily.”

“Maybe.”

“Honey, please bring him over. Or tell him to stop by. Please.”
