“Yes, you do.” Justin reached up and held her face in his hands. “You know exactly where he’s going. Now go. Hurry.”

With one calming breath, she knew Justin was right.

She knew exactly where to go.

CHAPTER 32

Katrina knew the pathall too well as she drove through the neighborhood down the hill from where she’d grown up. Before getting her license, she would run to the park, down the trail, through the woods. She recognized his motorcycle in the parking lot and pulled up beside it, letting the engine run for a moment as she tried to tame her racing heart.

He was here.

She had known all along where he was going to go. Her heart had tugged her there, memories of conversations from years ago slipping through.

“Sometimes I come here just to think, even times I know you won’t be here.”

Part of her knew Lorenzo needed his space, his solitude to gather his thoughts. Another part of her screamed that she needed to see him, to talk to him.

To explain how this made her feel.

Checking her face in the rearview mirror, she saw her red-rimmed eyes still swimming with tears. “Fuck it,” she muttered, running her fingertips under her eyes to wipe away the streaks there. It didn’t matter how bad she looked, all that mattered was going to Ren, telling him why she’d stood so still when his child had so willingly embraced her.

“Does it make me a horrible person?” she asked herself as she stepped out of her car. “Or does it make me human?”

She locked her car door, setting the alarm before putting her keys in her bag which she slung over her shoulder. Her heels clicked along the pavement, and she moved as quickly as she could towards the small clearing at the first turn. Maneuvering was difficult on the rocky surface, but she managed to take the trail around the bend to the clearing where she’d spent countless hours with the boy who had meant everything to her.

Lorenzo was sitting on the log, lit cigarette in his hand, his head bowed, his shoulders inward. “You shouldn’t be here,” he said without looking at her.

He’d been crying. Perhaps he still was; she couldn’t tell without coming closer. Caution had her keeping her distance, though, as she stood her ground. “Yes, I should.”

He took a long drag from the cigarette and exhaled slowly. “It’s not a good time, Trina.”

“It will never be a good time to say what I have to.”

He seemed to fold further inward at her words, his demeanor one of someone trying to disappear. He remained silent, waiting.

“I need you to understand,” she began, wringing her hands as she spoke. “I don’t want to hurt—”

“Too late.”

She paused at his biting tone, but took in a shuddering breath and maintained what composure she had left. “I couldn’t hug her back, Ren.”

“Why the hell not?”

The anger in his voice made her shudder. “I need you to understand—”
