Katrina hadn’t heard from Lorenzo, though.

Instead, that text had been sent to Judith, and it stung.

They’d made plans to be there together that night, even going so far as to have Lorenzo pick her up despite it being out of the way.

Now it was Judith standing at her front door in a body-hugging emerald dress and black stiletto pumps. She gave Katrina the once-over and said, “That’ll do, I suppose.”

“We’re not going to a nightclub,” Katrina reminded her, grabbing her bag and ensuring her keys were in it before she locked the door.

“Hey, our signatures are all over this bar. I want some recognition. Besides, you lost your job over this. You could always...oh, right. Your feet.” She scrunched up her nose. “Sorry. No heels for you tonight.”

“But yes to beer.” Katrina shut her door then locked the new deadbolt. “Lots of beer that I will no doubt need. Thanks for driving.”

“I’m sure seeing the Wonder Twins get their drink on will be all the entertainment I need. Justin is in the car, on his phone drumming up business.”

Katrina shook her head. “I hadn’t even thought of that.”

“You haven’t thought of much other than Cade for weeks now. Admit it; you’re back on.”

“We aren’t.” Katrina opened the back door and slid in, buckling her seatbelt before closing her door. Once Judith was in the driver’s seat, Justin was off his phone.

“That’s four yeses and a maybe. Got anyone coming?” he asked Katrina, who shook her head.

“I’ve been a bit preoccupied.”

“Did you see him today?”

Katrina nodded, her eyes staring out the window as Judith drove away.

“Well, Cade had extra booze brought in,” Judith spoke up. “And apparently he has a super-secret band or something for tonight. That’s why he had to stay at the bar.”

None of this had been brought to Katrina’s attention. All she knew was he had to get to his lawyer’s office, get that retainer in their hands to start his custody battle.

She hadn’t heard from him since.

“Did you see him earlier?” Justin asked, and Katrina nodded. “And?”

“And our parents are helping him get his daughter,” Katrina replied, her eyes still on the passing scenery.

“Don’t sound so thrilled,” Judith deadpanned.

She wasn’t thrilled. She should be, but all she could think is the child who’d so innocently asked for her hair to be braided should have been theirs. The only person who Lorenzo should have had any type of relationship with was her, and to know he’d been intimate with Mrs. Torrence, no matter that it had been done out of coercion, was breaking her already fractured heart.

Still, it was what Lorenzo wanted.

She would stand by that decision no matter what.

“Super-secret band, huh?” Justin asked, changing the subject. “Care to let your husband in on this secret?”

“I don’t even know,” Judith replied, and their friendly, teasing banter kept them occupied, allowing Katrina the time to think.

To grieve a relationship that she’d thought long placed behind her.

To face a future where she was uncertain what, if any, role Lorenzo would play a part in.

To be grateful Judith had agreed to be designated driver for the evening.

She knew she needed to get her drink on.
