“But it’s for the best.”

His sad eyes peered into hers. “Yeah, it is.”

“I’m standing by you, on your side. I don’t know how much that will help, but—”

“It helps a lot.”

She attempted to smile. “Good.”

But her heart was breaking all over again.

Lorenzo was holding her at arm’s length, keeping his distance, putting a wall between them that Katrina wouldn’t be able to penetrate.

But she understood.

The day before must have been his goodbye.

“I have to get going,” he said. “I don’t want to be late.”

There would be no kisses in the driveway that day.

There wouldn’t even be an embrace as he turned from her and got into his truck, the loud sounds of Alice in Chains blaring from the speakers as he started it up.

Hearing the strains ofWouldbrought tears to her eyes as she thought, how fitting.

“Honey?” she heard her mother call out. “Got a minute before you go?”

“Yeah,” she said, her voice tinged with melancholy.

“What’s this?” Mrs. Carter asked as Katrina reentered the house. “You look like you’ve lost your best friend.”

“I think I have, Mom,” she said as tears finally made it to the surface. “I really think I have.”

CHAPTER 35

Katrina’s feet werestill tender, but she managed to get her boots on. She stood before her full-length mirror taking in her appearance: hair flowing, black form-fitted shirt, blue jeans, and her black boots. She kept it simple, but still wanted to look...

How had she wanted to look?

Like she could still be with Lorenzo even though she couldn’t face the child that should have been hers?

With a shake of her head, she turned from the mirror and grabbed her essentials, shoving them into the small bag she’d be carrying with her tonight. There was no way she would miss this grand reopening of the bar that Lorenzo had always dreamed of.

Judith sent her a text telling her that she and Justin were on their way. Judith would be driving, and most likely be taking over the show knowing her once they arrived at Cade’s. It was still early, but they’d promised Lorenzo they’d be there at least an hour before the doors opened.
