“This place is amazing, thanks for letting us play here,” Jase said to Lorenzo, who shook his hand.

“Anytime. Thanks for coming.”

“Sorry about the bar tab,” Jase added, and Lorenzo shrugged.

“Not a problem, seriously.”

“He’s just mad because I can drink him under the table,” his wife said as she walked up. “Jackie says we’re about ready to go, babe.”

“Are you sure I can’t get you anything else?” Lorenzo asked, and Jase shook his head.

“We’re all good here. See you tomorrow when we come to get the rest of the equipment.”

“Sure thing.”

Katrina felt so out of place as everyone was raving about their night, about all the business cards thrown Judith’s way, about the crowd, about everything.

Except for Miranda.

“What about you?” Judith asked, nudging her. “What was the highlight of your night?”

Katrina stood a little taller and shrugged. “Probably slapping the shit out of Emily.”

Everyone fell silent.

“I’m sorry, you what?” Justin finally asked.

“I’m sorry I missed it,” Judith added.

“Trina...” The catch in Lorenzo’s voice made her falter. “How could you?”

“Because she had it coming. And this is about me, not you, so don’t worry.” Which was partially true, though Emily’s games with Lorenzo had pushed Katrina to her own breaking point. “She was out of line, I slapped her back into it. No big deal.”

“Unless she presses charges,” Judith said, making Lorenzo hang his head.

“Ren—”

“I’ve got to get these receipts in the books,” he said as he turned from the crowd, but instead of letting him walk away, Katrina followed him back to his office.

“Hey,” she said, pushing her way in behind him when he tried to shut the door in her face. “It’s not that big of a deal.”

“It could be if she chooses to make it.”

“I’m sorry then, okay? I’m sorry.”

“That’s just it, you’re not.”

“Ren, she just pushed me until—”

“Can we not do this now?” he asked, holding the receipts and looking down at his book. “These give me a big enough headache as it is.”

“Oh, move over.” Katrina took the receipts from him, not waiting for him to move before she had everything added up and written down. “There.” She looked over her shoulder at Lorenzo, whose expression was unreadable. “Done,” she added, standing up.

“Come work with me.”

“What?”

“You heard me. You’re out of a job right now, this stuff is piling up and giving me more headaches than I need. Work with me.”
