“Just around,” he said as he began to jog, and she kept pace beside him.

“Are you going to tell me what’s wrong?”

A sound between a laugh and a sob left him and he picked up his pace. Katrina did her best to keep up with him, following the path down Willow Creek Road to the Torrence’s estate, heading back towards the stables. Katrina knew the path well, still she struggled to keep up with him.

“Ren!” she called out. “Ren, please slow down.”

He began to slow, coming to a complete stop, his hands on his knees, his breath labored when she caught up to him.

He was sobbing.

“What’s going on, Ren?”

“Am I a bad person?”

“What? No!”

He stood, his hands fisting in his hair. “I can’t do this. I just can’t.”

“Can’t do what? What happened?”

With no warning, his hands grabbed her forearms, and his lips were on hers, bold and demanding, capturing her sigh as she surrendered. With the first touch of tongues a soft whimper left her and her hands caressed his face, her thumbs wiping away his tears.

Finally.

After nearly a year... finally.

Just as quickly as it began, the kiss ended, with Ren taking a step back, his breath labored. “I shouldn’t have.”

Katrina frowned. “Why not?” she asked before she could stop herself.

“You’re too good for me. You know that, right?”

“Ren...” She stepped forward and took his hand in hers. “Don’t you think it’s time?”

“For what?”

“For us.”

He muttered a curse under his breath as his eyes slid shut, and when they opened, his dark eyes met hers in the moonlight. “Fuck, yes,” was all he said before pulling her to him, his lips soft as they coaxed hers open.

He’d never told herwhat had made him so upset, never told her why he’d asked if he was a bad person.

And she’d never pressed the issue.

She’d simply carried them forward into their sophomore year of high school officially a couple. Finally being able to act on her feelings that had kindled the first time she laid eyes on him, she was oblivious to everything else around her.

Just as Judith had said.

“What if I asked you today?” she said to Lorenzo’s sleeping form. “Would you tell me what had upset you? Would you tell me why you always thought you were a bad person, that you’d never thought...never thought that I deserved you? You were the best thing in my life, Ren.”

His hand twitched in hers and she brought it up to her lips, leaving a soft kiss in his palm before tightening her hand around his again.

“I loved you with everything in me.”

His eyelids slowly began to open, and Katrina’s heart beat steadily, thumping in her chest at the sight of those eyes that had held her captive for so many years.
