“How’s he doing today, for real?”

“He’s awake, alert, and avoiding.”

“Ah, so he’s back to his old self.”

One corner of Katrina’s mouth lifted in a smile. “Somewhat.” Except back when they were together, she’d been sure that Lorenzo told her everything.

Now she knew there was no way that he did.

“Can you let him know I’m on my way? And I have a phone for him. Hey, did he happen to mention anything about an order I need to place?”

“I think that’s in the notebook.” The notebook that had her phone number in red ink in the very front.

And yet he’d never called.

CHAPTER 12

Katrina woke with ajolt hearing pounding on her front door. She groaned as she looked at the clock.

It was 4:58 AM.

This could not be good.

“Just a minute!” she called out as the pounding sounded again, and this time she was sure she wasn’t dreaming it. She pulled her robe on and rushed to the front door, remembering the last time someone had reached out to her.

It had been about Lorenzo.

She looked out the peephole and saw her brother standing there, his hand raised to knock again. “Cut it out, Justin!” She opened the door and a rush of sticky morning air greeted her as her brother walked in. “What is wrong with you? My alarm doesn’t even go off until...” Her voice trailed off as her alarm sounded in her bedroom.

“We need to talk. Go shut off your alarm; I’ll start the coffee.”

“Justin—”

“I brought fresh donuts.” He held the bag up, its logo from her favorite donut shop level with her sleepy eyes.

“You’re forgiven.”

“That’s what I thought.”

After turning her alarm off, she returned to the kitchen to see Justin sitting on the counter eating one of the freshly made donuts, bringing back memories.

So many memories.

Memories of him and Ren, memories of Ren sitting on the counter crooking his finger at her to come over, memories of a frosting battle between the three of them that had Justin and Katrina grounded for a week when their parents came home.
