“Trina, are you even listening?”

“Have I even had my coffee yet?” she countered. “First off, is he okay?”

“Who?”

She swatted at him with a kitchen towel. “Lorenzo, asshole.”

“Yeah, yeah, he’s great. Which is what I’m telling you. I tried talking to Judith last night, but she doesn’t get it, you know? Doesn’t get how close we all were, how tight knit that bond was.”

Katrina paused before biting down on her glazed donut. “You talked to Judith first?”

“Well, we are married. Besides, I had to explain being late.”

“You’re such a manchild.”

“So I keep being told. Anyhow, so this bar, it really does good business when he has bands so he’s able to stay afloat. But he’s looking for a slight redesign and some savvy marketing. Do you see where this is headed?”

“Not without my coffee, I don’t.”

“You and Judith.”

Katrina nearly choked. “What?”

“Judith can work on the interior, you can work on the logo and the marketing. You know, for an old friend.”

“Work for free for the ass who shattered my heart?” Katrina wrinkled up her nose. “And work with Judith, who would probably tell you to go to hell?”

“No, no, not for free. I mean, he can’t pay huge bucks, but he has some money from the insurance company.”

“For what?”

“The sign. Oh, and the fire. That was just an accident.”

“Lovely.”

“I kinda suggested it to him already.”

“That the fire was lovely?” Katrina teased.

“Who’s the ass now? No, about you and Judith working with him as a team. He seemed intrigued.”

“He said that really?”

“No, actually he asked me if I was out of my fucking mind first, but Trina...hear me out. He’s been through so much shit his whole life. We only knew the first part of it in bits and pieces and...and it was something we were all supposed to do together. Work to help this dream of his come true, remember?”

“Right, but I was supposed to be doing the books and looking after our two point five children in a house with a white picket fence. He left, Justin.”

“Here.” Justin poured her a cup of coffee and placed three packets of sweetener and just the right amount of cream. After stirring, he handed the mug to her. “Drink, then answer.”

“You think coffee is going to change my mind? And why are you bringing it up with me and not Lorenzo?”

“Be...cause it was my idea.”

She shook her head and took a sip of coffee. “Try again.”

“Because he thinks you’ll say no.”

“What do you know? He may be a smart man yet.”
