“Children!” Judith snapped her fingers. “He’s still in the hospital, according to this article. You could always pay him a visit, from an old family friend.”

Katrina shuddered. “I don’t think I can.”

“Why the hell not?” Justin asked.

“Because he kicked Ren out just before graduation. Because I never got the chance to say goodbye to him, never knew where he went.”

“That’s on Cade,” Judith commented, then she shrugged. “Just sayin.”

“It’s not like we can ask Mrs. Torrence. She died, remember?”

“I know she did, Justin. That was right around...” Her voice trailed off. “Right around when Emily reached out to me.”

“Coincidence?” Judith asked. “Because I’m thinking not.”

“Yeah, Mrs. Torrence never really trusted Lorenzo,” Justin pointed out. “Remember? She was always grilling him with questions, and eventually he could barely leave the house. Except for Sadie Hawkins.”

“And prom,” Katrina added, damning her heart for holding onto that night.

“I just feel sorry for Miranda.” Judith shrugged. “I figured the old man would kick the bucket before her mother did. And she’s so young. Now what sort of female does she have to look up to? Emily? Like this world needs another one of her around.”

Katrina had forgotten all about Emily’s younger sister, who’d been born months after they’d graduated and gone their separate ways. She’d only heard about it in passing, after her parents had received the birth announcement in the mail.

And Emily hadn’t mentioned her at all.

Perhaps she wasn’t important enough. She did take the attention from Emily, after all.

“You could always try talking to that shit stain of a human again,” Judith commented as she scrolled through her phone.

“Why do you hate her so much?” Katrina asked.

“I think the real question is, why don’t you? She’s a racist, homophobic, snobby bitch. There. I said it. And please, for the love of my sanity, don’t invite her to another family dinner.”

Katrina paused, pizza slice in hand. “I apologize for making you uncomfortable in your own home.”

“You don’t make me uncomfortable.” Judith shrugged and peered over her phone. “Even when you do your Wonder Twins thing. The best thing you ever did was stop being friends with her in high school, Trina. Trust me.”

“Is this a truce I feel coming on?” Justin asked, rubbing his hands together.

“Shut it, you,” Judith said to him, which only caused his grin to widen.

“Emily swears whatever Ren says is a lie,” Katrina said, a slight scowl on her face. “What if it isn’t true? What if Mr. Torrence never kicked him out?”

“There’s only one way to find out,” Justin said. “And if you’re not going to do it, I will. With my wife’s blessing, I’m sure.”

“Sure. Meddle. It’s what you do.”

“I love you, too,” he replied, reaching over and giving his wife a quick kiss. “Now, how about we all discuss how the two of you are going to work with Lorenzo.”

“Keep dreaming.”

“You don’t think it’s a good idea?” Katrina asked, and Judith sighed as she placed her phone on the coffee table.

“I think you’re setting yourself up for a world of hurt. And my husband, who loves me very much, isn’t always going to be there to pick up your pieces.”

“Yes, I will. Don’t listen to her.”

“You’re not helping, Justin.”
