“I rarely do. Seriously, though, he’s been through hell. And Cade’s was supposed to be something we all did together.”

“I was not in that equation,” Judith reminded him.

“But you are now. Just come see it with us.”

“Wait, I’m going back to Cade’s?” Katrina asked.

“Yeah, and this time really look. Both of you. If you won’t do it for him, do it because you love me. And do it because maybe I’ll cave and get us a puppy and we’ll stop talking about babies for a few years.”

“Wow, you are serious.” Judith sat up straighter. “Any puppy?”

“What is happening right now?” Katrina asked, but her question was ignored.

“Almost. I draw the line at the dogs that slobber.”

“Okay, I’m in. When do we go?”

“Hey!” Katrina exclaimed. “Still here. When do I get a vote?”

Justin took her hand in his. “You’ll do it for Lorenzo. You’ll do it because Ren and Trina always made a good team.”

“Until we didn’t.”

“Until whatever shit went down. Besides.” Justin’s grin widened. “How better to find out the truth? Let’s do this.”

“Any puppy?” Judith asked again, and Justin sighed.

“Any puppy. Trina?”

Katrina thought of the pain she saw in Lorenzo’s face that day, of the questions he didn’t want to answer.

The questions he hadn’t wanted to answer in the hospital.

But maybe...

“Trina?”

“Yes. I’m in.”

Their mother still picked up gifts for them anytime she went on vacation, and Katrina found it endearing.

She was also met with the latest gossip in the country club circle.
